Tri Region Community
 Building Luncheon
Featuring Guest presenter:
Doug Griffiths
Author, Speaker, & Founder of 13 Ways

May 9, 2017
  11:15am - 1:45pm

When asked why he does what he does, Doug's answer is simple: to help build better communities. Doug believes communities are the foundation on which we build stronger families, stronger businesses, and stronger nations. Build strong communities, and success will follow.

He helps communities identify what is holding them back from finding success, and then he helps them overcome it. When they aren't looking, Doug inspires, and often shocks them, with a presentation showing how they are destroying their own chance at success. Then he helps build them back up and get them on a better path.

Yes, it sounds like therapy. It is. It is community therapy, which is why he is often called a community therapist. And the great thing is that it works.

Join your local business associations The Stony Plain & District Chamber of Commerce and The Spruce Grove & District Chamber of Commerce as they host this inspiring and motivating friend of Alberta communities.

Community Engagement
Launches for Westwind Lands

City of Spruce Grove Council were joined by a full house of area residents and business in council chambers Monday night to view the proposed build out of the Westwind Lands on the north east development lands on the Yellowhead Highway and Century Road. The focus of the development is a multi-use Special Events Centre, featuring two ice surfaces; one with over 3,000 seats with the potential to host events that can seat approximately 5,200 persons. "The intent is to make the facility as multi-use as possible", including hockey, other sports, trade shows and concerts with around 95 annual event days. The projection for the facility is 66 events per year with possibility for more. The main spectator bowl would have 25% community use with the second ice surface having 100% community use. The project would also free up 25% of primetime ice the Grant Fuhr Arena by having the Spruce Grove Saints Junior A host their games in the proposed new facility. The community at large, including Parkland County residents and Town of Stony Plain residents are invited to view two presentations at the Horizon Stage on Monday, April 3rd. Community engagement starts today! The City has previously made presentations to the town and to the county for their support, understanding that the tri-region is in need of more ice surface for community groups.

The Westwind Lands will be home to a Loblaws grocer, two potential hotels with conference facilities and many restaurants and retail.

Tri-Region residents are invited to Horizon Stage on Monday, April 3rd to view two presentations that evening. For times of presentation please go to www.sprucegrove.org

Budget 2017: More Urgency Needed to Close Canada's Competitiveness Gap
More urgency is needed in reducing business costs and improving competitiveness says the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.

"While we welcome specific measures in the budget on skills and innovation, our international competitors are racing ahead," said the Hon. Perrin Beatty, President and CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. "The U.S. election was a game-changer, yet the budget is written as if nothing has changed. As our number-one trading partner rolls back regulation and cuts taxes, Canadian businesses face more regulation and increased costs imposed by all levels of government for fees, taxes and essential inputs like electricity."  ...continue reading

Mars, weed, coding and hiking: A few things you might have missed in the federal budget
Marie-Danielle Smith,  National Post   March 23, 2017

After a deep dive into Canada's 2017 federal budget, the National Post has emerged with spending details on Mars exploration, Haitian clothes, children's hacking and the Uber tax.
They have put together some factoids you - or Joe, the hypothetical Canadian referenced repeatedly in question period Thursday - might have missed in the flood of coverage surrounding Wednesday's budget release...continue reading

CCC reports Budget 2017 - A Time for Caution
Skills, Innovation and Wait-and-see
The government's first budget centered on campaign promises: the middle class,  growth, climate change. But, a lot of the critical details were put off to later: the  infrastructure plan with "export corridors," the innovation agenda, health spending, the  tax expenditure review. Of course, the government had only been in office for 100  days, and it needed to consult on many of these items.

Budget 2017 is completely different-big deficits and economic uncertainty mean  there is not much money for new programs or big announcements....continue reading

TAX MATTERS

How to claim home office expenses on your taxes Thursday, Mar. 23, 2017

TIM CESTNICK   The Globe and Mail

I was locked-up in Ottawa with a few hundred other poor souls, reading over the federal budget in advance of Bill Morneau's budget speech late in the afternoon. It was about as much fun as, well, sitting in my dentist's chair waiting for a root canal (no offence to my dentist, who is excellent, and a very nice guy).

The budget offered virtually no tax relief and it's clear that Canadians shouldn't expect any such thing in the near future; not while the government racks up $143-billion in additional debt over the next five years.

So, where does this leave the average Canadian? I suggest that getting back to basics is a good thing. Too many of us are failing to take advantage of tax breaks that are right in front of us. Let's start with things you're paying for anyway - like your home. Here's a primer on the "who and how" of claiming home-related expenses to save tax. ... continue reading
Are We Ready for the Next Generation of Small Business Owners?
Canadian business is about to go through an era of unprecedented upheaval. Is it an economic crisis? A climate calamity? A Trump presidency? It's much worse: a mass-retirement of business owners!A staggering 75% of small business owners will retire over the next decade, and $1 trillion in business assets will change hands. Are we ready? The answer is a resounding no. Less than half of small business owners have succession plans and only 9% have a formal written plan. We often hear that owners don't like talking about retirement. They've been leading their business for decades and it's part of their identity. Many just assume that they will be able to sell the business or pass it along to kids.....

Mental Matters: Why your workplace should have a mental health  initiative
Workplace mental health initiatives improve not just employees' health and happiness, but businesses' bottom line, too

Mar 20, 2017 by Jenn Mentanko, Alberta Ventures

A productive employee used to be one who could work quickly: They could hammer lots of nails, churn out lots of product, all while never missing a day's work. Sick days were a lost opportunity for a day's wage and taking a mental health day was unheard of. Today, strength, stamina and a perfect attendance record are not attributes we list first on our resumés. With automation and the shift from goods-producing to service professions, intellect is number one. A valued employee is no longer one with just physical prowess, but one with resilience, problem solving skills and innovative ideas as well. According to Jeff Moat, president of the mental health campaign Not Myself Today, "Maximizing the potential of people has never been more important."  .... continue reading
