Launches for Westwind Lands

City of Spruce Grove Council were joined by a full house of area residents and business in council chambers Monday night to view the proposed build out of the Westwind Lands on the north east development lands on the Yellowhead Highway and Century Road. The focus of the development is a multi-use Special Events Centre, featuring two ice surfaces; one with over 3,000 seats with the potential to host events that can seat approximately 5,200 persons. "The intent is to make the facility as multi-use as possible", including hockey, other sports, trade shows and concerts with around 95 annual event days. The projection for the facility is 66 events per year with possibility for more. The main spectator bowl would have 25% community use with the second ice surface having 100% community use. The project would also free up 25% of primetime ice the Grant Fuhr Arena by having the Spruce Grove Saints Junior A host their games in the proposed new facility. The community at large, including Parkland County residents and Town of Stony Plain residents are invited to view two presentations at the Horizon Stage on Monday, April 3rd. Community engagement starts today! The City has previously made presentations to the town and to the county for their support, understanding that the tri-region is in need of more ice surface for community groups.
The Westwind Lands will be home to a Loblaws grocer, two potential hotels with conference facilities and many restaurants and retail.

Budget 2017: More Urgency Needed to Close Canada's Competitiveness Gap
More urgency is needed in reducing business costs and improving competitiveness says the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.
"While we welcome specific measures in the budget on skills and innovation, our international competitors are racing ahead," said the Hon. Perrin Beatty, President and CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. "The U.S. election was a game-changer, yet the budget is written as if nothing has changed. I was locked-up in Ottawa with a few hundred other poor souls, reading over the federal budget in advance of Bill Morneau's budget speech late in the afternoon. It was about as much fun as, well, sitting in my dentist's chair waiting for a root canal (no offence to my dentist, who is excellent, and a very nice guy).
The budget offered virtually no tax relief and it's clear that Canadians shouldn't expect any such thing in the near future; not while the government racks up $143-billion in additional debt over the next five years.
So, where does this leave the average Canadian? I suggest that getting back to basics is a good thing. Too many of us are failing to take advantage of tax breaks that are right in front of us. A new industry focused
on renewable energy

will be setting up shop in Parkland County. Pinnacle Renewable Energy Inc. will begin construction this spring on a new $75 million wood pellet plant in Entwistle. Pinnacle Renewable Energy Inc. is the longest-established wood pellet producer in Western Canada. The new facility will produce wood pellets which are used around the world to produce a low carbon renewable energy resource. The facility is expected to begin operations in 2018, creating approximately 60 full time positions.
