"Botanica," at the Moraga Art Gallery
Now through March 18, 522 Center Street, Rheem Shopping Center

"Botanica," the new year's first exhibit at the Moraga Art Gallery, derives its name from exquisite floral images by gallery member and photographer Lucy Beck of Lafayette. Her camera freezes moments in time, giving the delicate and complicated beauty of flowers some permanence. Also featured are stoneware and porcelain pieces for the home by guest artist Chanda Beck (no relation), whose work, inspired by antiques and Asian art, is adorned with playful renderings of plants, flowers, seed pods, and patterns found in nature. Paintings, jewelry, glassware, photographs, and ceramics by the gallery's other members and guest artists will also be on display throughout the show, which runs until March 18. The gallery is located at 522 Center Street, Rheem Shopping Center, in Moraga and is open Wednesday through Sunday from 12 noon to 5pm. March Event at Diablo Fine Arts Gallery "Travels with an Artist"

The Diablo Fine Arts Gallery presents "Travels with an Artist", a new show featuring 3 guest artists whose travels have defined their art and their passions. In addition to these wonderful guest artists, our sixteen member artists of the Gallery will be giving us all a glimpse of special ways that they combine their travels and their art. The show runs from March 1 to April 1. The Diablo Fine Arts Gallery is open Wednesday-Saturday 11-5pm.  Come meet these wonderful artists at our reception on Saturday, March 11, 4-6pm. Each artist will speak briefly about their journey of combining the love for the road with their passion for their art. Help Build a Mobile Classroom Kitchen!
EVERY Wednesday in 2017, 11am-10pm, Patxi's Pizza

Patxi's Pizza of Lafayette is raising money for Cooking with Kids Foundation to help build a Mobile Classroom Kitchen to teach kids (parents) in underserved communities to cook and eat healthy. Join us for lunch or dinner between 11am-10pm EVERY Wednesday in 2017. 10% of all proceeds (dine-in, delivery or carry out) is being donated! Hope Begins with a CASA Volunteer
Thursday, March 2, 6:30pm-8pm and Friday, March 17, 12:30pm-2pm

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) volunteers are ordinary people doing extraordinary work for abused, neglected and abandoned children and youth in foster care in our community. As sworn officers of the court, CASA volunteers are appointed by a juvenile court judge to advocate one-on-one for children and youth in foster care. As an advocate you will be more than just a mentor - you will be a powerful voice for a child or youth during their uncertain journey in the foster care system. You don't have to be a lawyer or social worker. CASA of Contra Costa County will provide you with the training you need to be a successful advocate. Lamorinda Arts Alliance Announces New Exhibit: "Driven to Abstraction"

The Lamorinda Arts Alliance presents a new exhibit titled "Driven to Abstraction" at the Lindsay Dirkx Brown Gallery in San Ramon, that opens on March 2.  The exhibit will explore the process of abstraction and will include paintings, mixed media, photos, prints and sculptures by local artists. Our reception will be Saturday, March 11 from 2pm to 4pm.  Join us, visit with the artists, and enjoy appetizers and beverages while you browse our presentation of abstract artwork.  The show will run through March 29. www.laa4art.org

Gold Coast Chamber Players present Threads

The award winning Gold Coast Chamber Players present, Threads, a concert of music featuring female composers throughout history on Sunday, March 5 at 3pm at the Lafayette Library Community Hall, 3491 Mt. Diablo Blvd. "Threads" focuses on the music of women who have forged important roles in the field of music, at times having to break through the societal prejudices and perceptions of the "appropriate role" for women. World-renowned musicians weave together a tapestry of music for piano, strings and voice of heartbreaking beauty while guiding you through unexpected places in history. 14th Annual High School Visual Arts Competition Reception

The Lamorinda Arts Council (LAC) will host their 14th Annual High School Visual Arts Competition from February 28 to March 30 at the Orinda Library Art Gallery. Entries for the High School Visual Arts Competition were accepted from February 1 through February 24. The competition was open to 9th through 12th grade students living in or attending public or private high schools in Orinda, Lafayette and Moraga and to students who attend the Acalanes Union High School District schools. The Jennifer Perlmutter Gallery presents Side x Side, an exhibit that features the paintings of James Koskinas and Julie Schumer. Koskinas and Schumer are married and share a studio in Santa Fe, NM. They both work in acrylic and tend towards a painting style of large scale abstract expressionism and figurative.  Schumer's paintings are abstract works, with bold brushwork and color. The figure is Koskina's primary theme, part of his quest to know the human condition. They paint companionably in their Santa Fe studio, a modern day Jackson Pollack and Lee Krasner. The exhibit runs March 9 through April 15 with an Artist's Reception Thursday March 9 at 6pm, which includes a presentation by the artists and a film preview of The Twilight Angel. www.jenniferperlmuttergallery.com
Sunset Boulevard

Didn't see the 1950 classic Sunset Boulevard on the big screen?  This amazing film received 11 Oscar nominations and took home three: Best Actress (Gloria Swanson), Best Actor (William Holden) and Best Screenplay (Charles Brackett, Billy Wilder and D.M. Marshman, Jr.).  The great Billy Wilder, who won six Oscars in his career, directed Sunset Boulevard. An aging silent film queen (Gloria Swanson) refuses to accept that her stardom has ended. She hires a young screenwriter (William Holden) to help set up her movie comeback.This black and white film will be stunning on the big screen in the Orinda Theatre - the way Wilder intended the film to be seen - in a movie palace. Oscar Evening with Oscar Recipient, Barry Morrow (Rain Man)
Saturday, March 11, 4pm, Orinda Theatre

In 1989, Morrow won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for Rain Man, the story of a wheeler-dealer (Tom Cruise) and his idiot savant brother (Dustin Hoffman).  Morrow wrote the story and co-wrote the screenplay with Ronald Bass. Barry Levinson directed. Rain Man received overwhelmingly positive reviews, praising Hoffman's role and the wit and sophistication of the screenplay. It was the highest-grossing film of 1988 and won four Oscars.  The Oscar Series is part of the 20th Anniversary yearlong celebration of the California Independent Film Festival. Greatest Songs from Disney Movies

Patti Liedecker returns to the Rheem Theatre with a concert for the young and the young at heart, as she performs everyone's favorite Disney songs.  Enjoy the live baby grand piano performance with songs from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio,The Little Mermaid, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp, Frozen, The Lion King, and Beauty and the Beast. Wine & Tapas Film Night & Fundraiser Featuring "Before the Flood"

Sustainable Lafayette and Our Savior's Lutheran Church are co-hosting a special wine & tapas film night and fundraiser featuring the new documentary "Before the Flood."  Start the evening with shared wine & tapas at 6:30pm, and then at 7pm grab some free popcorn and join Leonardo DiCaprio on a journey to five continents and the arctic to witness climate change firsthand.  With unprecedented access to scientists, political leaders, and thought leaders, DiCaprio shares a riveting account of the changes now occurring as well as the actions we can take to prevent the disruption of life on our planet. Orinda's' Stand-Up Comedy Series continues with funny guy, Kevin Farley who frequents numerous comedy clubs around the country.  He is a regular at venues such as The Laugh Factory in Los Angeles and Chicago, The Improv in Los Angeles and Palm Beach, Florida and the legendary Comedy Store.  Farley studied at the Second City in Chicago and soon after starred in films such as Black Sheep (with his brother Chris Farley) and The Waterboy with Adam Sandler. He's had leading roles in An American Carol and White Knight to name a few.  His TV guest appearances have been on Curb Your Enthusiasm, Rules of Engagement, The Neighbors, Hot in Cleveland, Just Shoot Me, United States of Tara, True Jackson, VP, and Hawaii Five-O. Kevin also appeared in HA! The Musical in New York.  In addition, he has hosted many live shows and has been featured on The Today Show, The View, Extra, Fox News and numerous radio shows. "Day in the Life" Photo Contest 2017

Join us for the City of Lafayette's "Day in the Life" Photo Contest! Featuring photographs taken in Lafayette on March 20, 2017-- Spring Equinox! Photographers must live or work in Lafayette. Photographs must be taken in Lafayette and must be appropriate for general viewing. The City of Lafayette may, at its discretion, use submitted photos to display on its website or other social media. The Public Art Committee will review the entries and display photos in the art gallery at the Lafayette Library and Learning Center (LLLC) in June 2017. For more information, click here.

The next class series starts Wednesday, March 22 in Moraga. This continues the expanded 8 nights series to allow more time for hands-on practice. Diablo Ballet presents its 23rd Anniversary Celebration Performance

Historical Houses Presentation and Tour
Saturday, March 25, 1:30-3pm

Learn of our local valley's history through the chronicles of three old houses from the 1800's: The Old Yellow House in Orinda, Rodgers Ranch in Pleasant Hill, and the John Muir House in Martinez. The inhabitants of these three houses lived in an original sustainable fashion, initially with wells, gardens, fruit trees, livestock and horses. The houses were miles apart, yet webbed together by an overall similar lifestyle, use of horse and carriage, and some exchange of information and goods. The tour will be held on Saturday, March 25 from 1:30-3pm. Our classes are free. However, a $5 donation is appreciated to support our education programs. Learn more here.
ZEBOP! The Music of Santana

Taking their name from a classic Santana album of the same name, ZEBOP! consists of seven energetic and talented Bay Area Musicians who take great pride in performing the music of Santana with passion and dedication. Central San Academy 
 
The Central San six-week program is open to members of the public to learn about everything they do, including recycling water, collecting household hazardous waste, maintaining sewer pipes, and of course, cleaning wastewater. For our first session last year, we were honored by the California Special Districts Association with the Exceptional Public Outreach & Advocacy Award, and we hope to build on that success. Classes are about 2.5 hours each, held one evening a week for six weeks from April 4 to May 9, 2017, 6:30pm - 8:30pm. The April 25 class is a daytime facilities tour from 12:30 to 3:00pm. Mobility Matters Rides 4 Veterans

Mobility Matters, a nonprofit agency based in Lafayette, services all of Contra Costa County as a mobility management center. Our Rides for Seniors program provides a free, one-on-one, door-through-door transportation program for otherwise homebound older adults. Through our Transportation Information and Referral Helpline, we match individuals with the provider that fits his or her mobility needs. In early 2017, we are launching a new program, called Rides 4 Veterans. Screened and trained veterans will be giving other veterans rides to their medical appointments, grocery shopping, and other necessities. In order to carry out our mission and keep the promises we make to the vulnerable populations we serve, we have two ongoing needs--financial and human resources (volunteers). Learn more here.
