PTSA News
Majors of the Future seminar
Weekly help with choosing a college
The College Application Workshop continues its series of mini-seminars on Wednesdays after school. Free pizza will be provided and no registration is required, so send your student along!

TODAY! Wednesday, March 1: Majors of the Future
What careers will current 16 and 17 year olds have in 10 or 20 years? What majors will best prepare them for these new jobs? Will today's "hottest jobs" be obsolete by the time these students graduate from college? From alternative energy to information technology, virtual reality to urban farming, the College Prep Mini-Seminar on Wednesday, March 1 will look at the future of jobs and the educational preparation students need to be marketable and successful. This is a perfect workshop for all students, no matter their current interest. Have your student join us in the library to think outside the current job box of 2017 and imagine the jobs of 2027 and beyond!

Mark Your Calendars:
  • Wednesday, March 8 - College Opportunities in the Arts: Theater, Dance, Film, Music & Art
  • Wednesday, March 15 - 20 Great Schools for Business, Engineering and Computer Science
View the full list of mini-seminar topics. For more information contact Judy Shedd or Debby Cossey. All students are welcome. Sponsored by the LWHS PTSA.

AP Gov't students represent in Olympia

Mr. Dawson's AP Government classes have again worked with the Capitol Classroom project through TVW. This project sets up the class with a lobbyist who works in Olympia. We video chat with our lobbyist five times between January and March, giving students the opportunity to ask questions and discuss the political process. As a part of this project, both classes wrote a bill to make composting mandatory in all public schools in the state of Washington. With the help of our lobbyist Michael Moran and Senator Guy Palumbo (1st District), the class was able to get their bill introduced in the Washington State Senate. With the sponsorship of Representatives Kloba, Lovick, and Macri, SB 5571 has also been introduced in the House, where it is named HB 1781.

On February 14, our bill went before the Senate Education Committee and students traveled to Olympia to testify in support of the bill and answer questions from the Senators about its merits. Lizzie Bensussen, Alex Lyon, Madison Miller, and Henry Arnold (pictured here) did a fabulous job presenting arguments for the bill and answering questions. Although a few amendments are probably in the works, our bill received a very positive response from the members on the committee. It was a tremendous opportunity and experience for all the students to be a part of our democracy and see government in action. I am extremely proud of all the hard work my students put into this project; not only the four who spoke, but also other students who helped research and prepare statements, pamphlets, and information.  -- Michael Dawson, AP Government teacher

Career & Counseling Center
Registration for 2017-18 -- already!

We have begun registration with current LWHS students. Students receive a copy of their transcript, a credit check form, and a registration form during our classroom visit. Students are encouraged to select their classes carefully--keeping in mind their graduation requirements, their interests, and post-high school goals, while aiming to keep a balanced senior year. Our course catalogue is available on LWHS's website, and counselors are here to help.  Thank you for your involvement in this process.

Counselors will visit classrooms on Feb.22-23 (Juniors); Feb.27 (Sophomores); and Feb. 28 (Freshmen). All students will register online via Career Cruising in ROO period on March 9. Students need to bring their charged laptops and their registration forms.

Advanced placement exams
Registration March 6-17
Advanced Placement exams are scheduled for May 1 - 12. Registration will be  at the end of C lunch and  run from March 6 - 17. Students can pick up a registration packet from their AP teacher or from the Counseling Center.  Included in this packet are the registration envelope, information handout, and AP Bulletin. The cost is $96.00 per exam, and payment can be made one of two ways:
  1. online through Parent Access: follow the directions given for submitting the envelope and receipt to Counseling by March 17 at end of C lunch (new this year), or
  2. at the bookkeeper's window: make checks payable to Lake Washington School District and submit the completed registration envelope with check inside. Students need their school ID card with them when they pay for their exams.
Students have been preparing all year for their exams. If they are unsure whether or not they should test, students should check with their individual subject teachers.
