Greetings from Muskingum President Sue Hasseler
February 2017
The month of February brought many opportunities for alumni and students to connect with each other and to enjoy the shared Muskie spirit and pride that are such an important part of our community.
CHILLY DAYS...WARM HEARTS

During one of the coldest weekends of the winter, a group of our hardiest students braved sub-freezing temperatures to take a "Polar Plunge" into the campus lake in exchange for donations to benefit the College Drive Food Pantry... and our alumni and their families enjoyed an afternoon skate at Chiller Ice Rink in Easton, featuring hot chocolate and The Muskie.

KUDOS TO THE FORENSIC TEAM

Our Forensics Team had an excellent showing at the recent Ohio Forensic Association State Championship. The team placed second in the Presidential Division and junior Jaliah Oglesby was named State Champion in Programmed Oral Interpretation. Members of the all-varsity-team are moving on to compete at the Pi Kappa Delta National Tournament in March. The team is led by Communication faculty member Rachel Pollock.

OAC HONORS: MUSKIE NAMED 2017 FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR

Congratulations to Marcus Dempsey on being named Ohio Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year in Men's Basketball. Dempsey, who ranks second on the team and fifth in the conference in scoring, has netted more than 430 points, including a career-high 38 points in the February 8 game against Mount Union. Dempsey and sophomore Jarrell Marsh - who was named OAC Freshman of the Year in 2016 -  were recognized with 2017 All-OAC Honorable Mention accolades, and senior Joshua Keyes earned All-OAC Second Team honors. It has been wonderful to see the Muskie spirit in action as our students, faculty, staff, and alumni come out to support all of our athletic teams!
MUSKIE PRIDE AT THE SUPERBOWL

New England cornerbacks coach Josh Boyer '00 earned a second Super Bowl ring as he helped coach the Patriots to their historic comeback win against the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI. Congratulations! Pictured: Coach Boyer (r) and Muskingum Associate VP for Institutional Advancement and Major Gifts Jeff Heacock '76 (l) celebrating the February 5 win in Houston, Texas.
55th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION OF FRIENDSHIP 7

On February 20, 1962, John Glenn became the first American to orbit the earth, circling the globe three times in a five-hour mission before splashing down safely into the Atlantic Ocean.  A special exhibit commemorating his Friendship 7 flight opened in the Roberta A. Smith University Library with a campus celebration on February 20, 2017 -
55 years to the day of his historic achievement. The exhibit will remain on display in the library through April 7.
UNIVERSITY LAUNCHES MUSKINGUM SOCIETY

Each day on campus, I see the tangible results of the generosity of Muskingum alumni and friends. Every gift counts and helps to make an impact on the education we can provide to our students. We are excited to announce the Muskingum Society - a new opportunity for alumni to be recognized as ongoing partners in sustaining our historic tradition of life-changing education. With your annual contribution of $1000 or more, you will be recognized as a Muskingum Society member during special occasions and events throughout the year. Those who join now as Charter Members of the Muskingum Society will also be permanently recognized on campus. For more information, visit the Muskingum Society
