Johnny Cash Trail Phase II Construction Begins
Work will begin this week on the second phase of the Johnny Cash Trail, located at East Natoma Street and Folsom Prison Road. This phase of the project includes 1.25 miles of Class I paved trail, an undercrossing tunneling beneath Prison Road to allow trail users to safely bypass vehicular traffic, and a beautiful 190-foot wooden arched bridge that will provide views of the American River Canyon, Lake Natoma, and beyond. The project also includes a paved trail spur for prison employees that starts at Natoma Street and ends at the prison employee parking lot. Two-way traffic will be maintained on Prison Road during the construction. Minor delays can be expected. When completed in early fall of 2017, Phase II of the Johnny Cash Trail will connect to existing trail in Digger and Sharon Williams Rodeo Park, providing cyclists, runners, and walkers a convenient route to access Folsom's Historic District and the extensive American River Parkway trail. Funding for the $3.23 million project is provided by a variety of federal grants and local transportation funds. Learn more.

Infrastructure and Road Improvements Begin South of Highway 50
An 18-month schedule of infrastructure and road improvements is starting south of Highway 50 for the new Folsom Ranch plan area-- 3,513 acres annexed into the City of Folsom in 2012. This spring and summer, construction activities will include infrastructure and safety improvements such as water, sewer, streets and utilities, plus temporary closures and detours of Placerville Road and Scott Road. An east-west connector will be built between those roads, eventually running parallel to Highway 50, similar to Iron Point Road to the north. The Sacramento Municipal Utility District will build a substation to serve the area with electrical power. Traffic safety and detour signs will be posted.
Planned in accordance with Measure W, a ballot measure passed by Folsom voters, land owners were required to secure an independent water supply for the plan area, provide transportation improvements to mitigate traffic impacts, preserve 30 percent of the land as natural open space, and allow for new schools-all at no cost to existing Folsom residents. The plan that met those requirements was adopted by the Folsom City Council in 2012.
The plan area was the subject of a visioning process instituted by the City with hundreds of residents at dozens of public hearings addressing a range of issues including land use, open space, transportation, and financing. Their recommendations resulted in scenarios reviewed by the Folsom City Council in 2005, which ultimately evolved into the design adopted in 2012.
Highlights of the plan area include 835 contiguous acres of oak woodlands, 120 acres of community parks, a vibrant town center, new homes, transit improvements to mitigate traffic impacts from the plan area, up to 8,000 high quality jobs, and a new high school, middle school and elementary schools.

Start Your Spring Cleaning with a Bulky Waste Pickup
Has your outdoor furniture or barbecue seen better days? Is your yard in need of an overhaul? The City of Folsom can help!
The City of Folsom offers Bulky Waste Pickup, a free service available three times per year to Folsom single family residential customers. It offers an easy way for residents to dispose of bulky items that do not fit in their standard garbage cans.
Acceptable items include appliances, furniture, barbecues, tires and yard waste. Up to five cubic yards may be disposed of per scheduled pickup. Bulky Waste Pickups are provided by appointment only. Due to the popularity of the program, appointments fill up fast. Requests for pickups increase by 20 percent in the spring, so book your appointment early either online or by calling 916-355-8367.
It is important to note that disposal items may not be placed curbside any sooner than one day prior to a scheduled pickup date. Avoid blocking pedestrian traffic by placing material at the edge of the street, not on the sidewalk. Crews start early! Make sure your items are out by 6 a.m. to avoid missing your appointment.
Household hazardous waste -- such as paint, motor oil, batteries, and antifreeze- - is not accepted in the Bulky Waste Pickup service. The City of Folsom offers a free Door 2 Door residential collection service for household hazardous waste. Appointments can be scheduled online or by calling 916-355-8350.
