HMM 2014-2015 Lecture Series

We are pleased to introduce our 2014-2015 Lecture Series, bringing you the knowledge of established authors, sailors and experts. Each evening begins with a reception at 6:00pm, followed by the lecture starting at 7:00pm.

Our inaugural lecture on October 23 will feature John Jackson, professor at the Naval War College in Newport. Professor Jackson's lecture is most timely: "Rise of the Drones" will provide an overview of the various unmanned aerial vehicle systems now in use and in development, including the Global Hawk, the Predator, and the Unmanned Carrier Launched Air System. He will also discuss some of the legal and ethical implications of using robots in warfare.
Museum's History Wall to be Upgraded

Thanks to a generous grant from the Grayce B. Kerr Fund, HMM will be able to upgrade and modernize the entrance to the Museum and the Time Line Wall at the front of the Museum. The current exhibit has been in place in the Sidney DeWolf Herreshoff Room since the Museum moved to its present location in the early 1990s, and is definitely showing its age.
Herreshoff Regatta

A fleet of exceptional classic yachts gathered at the Museum over the weekend of August 22-24, 2014. The event opened on Friday with the Living Boat Show. This year the Museum has been celebrating the 100th anniversary of the design of the Newport 29, the Buzzards Bay 25, and the Herreshoff 12.  Beautiful examples of each design were on moorings just off the Museum, including DOLPHIN (HMCo. #727, a Newport 29), the Buzzard Bay 25 sisters MINK (1914 HMCo. #733) and BAGATELLE (1914 HMCo. #736), as well as our own 12 BONITA (1914 HMCo. #761).

Sailing School Recap

We had our busiest summer yet at the Herreshoff Seamanship Program! Over 100 students participated in our 5 sold out sessions and were thrilled to sail on the 12 1/2 in its centennial year. With the help of the McCarthey Foundation, many scholarship students from Bristol and the Paul Cuffee School enjoyed sailing this summer as well.  We hope to expand our program next summer to include more boats and instructors with more flexible sessions. Registration forms for the Summer of 2015 will be available in November at herreshoff.org.
Curator's Log:
Completion of ARIA's Museum Restoration for the BB25 Centennial

Paul Bates donated the Buzzards Bay 25 daysailer ARIA (Ex-WHITE CAP (HMCo 738) to the museum in 1992 and the museum commissioned MP&G to return her to original condition. She has been on display since that time, but lacking spars and final outfit. This August, just before the Herreshoff Regatta, Paul and an MP&G crew led by Andy Giblin completed her outfitting to honor the class centennial. In the following reprint from the 2014 Classic Yacht Symposium Proceedings, Paul describes the work (to be) accomplished. The museum is greatly indebted to Paul, the Chester family and MP&G for ARIA's "new look."
