Counselor in Training Program & Spring Day Camp
Counselor in Training Program: MSU Extension is recruiting high school teens in grades 9-12 to volunteer to facilitate day camps and other youth events at the Max Thompson Family Resource Center, 11370 Hupp Street, Warren. In exchange, teens will be given certificates of community service, a letter of reference based on their performance, many professional development workshops, and opportunities to attend statewide and national events.
Spring Day Camp is April 3-7, 2017 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. The camp, for youth ages 5-12, is fun and educational! The cost is $50 per youth. Breakfast, lunch and a healthy snack are included. After-hours care is available. Register online at

Ray's Riding Rascals 4-H Horse Tack Sale
Ray's Riding Rascals 4-H Club's 37th Annual
4-H Horse Tack Sale
is on March 4, 2017 at the Berville Lions Field Hall, 13651 Hough Road, Allenton from 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Buy or sell anything for horse or rider. The admission cost is $3 per person. Youth ages 12 and under are free. The event is open to the public.
Consignment check in is Friday, March 3rd from 6-8 p.m. or Saturday, March 4th from 8-9 a.m. Consignment fees are $2 per page (15 items or less). Ray's Riding Rascals 4-H Club receives 15% commission on sold items only. There is a secured and lit area for horse trailers, buggies, carts, etc. Call Michelle at 248-425-3174 for more information.
Start planning for Fair now
It's time to start planning Fair 2017! Some important dates to get on your calendar are:
- March 14, 6:30 p.m. The 4-H Spring Club Leader Meet is 6:30 p.m. at Macomb County MSU Extension, 21885 Dunham Road, Clinton Township. Fair is always an important piece of this meeting. Superintendents, please be prepared to discuss with the club leaders what they need to know about fair for your area. For example, explain what the timeline looks like, what expectations are the week of fair, etc. Please R.S.V.P. to [email protected] or 586-469-6431.
- June 7th, 6 p.m. - There will be a Craft Superintendent meeting at the Fair office.
- June 14th, 7 p.m. - There will be a Livestock Superintendent meeting at the Fair office.
- July 30th, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. - Fair set up.
Fair Theme: "There's No Place Like 4-H"
Votes are in, and the 2017 Macomb County 4-H fair theme is, "There's No Place Like 4-H." The theme was the suggestion of Anna Hill of School Section 4-H Club. The theme received 29 votes.
"4-H...An American Tradition," submitted by Penny Cline of Alarro came in second with 18 votes. In third was "4-H: One Team, Country Dreams, Dirty Boots and Blue Jeans!" with 17 votes. The third-place theme was suggested by Willow Hollingsworth of Ray's Riding Rascals 4-H Club.
There were 16 suggestions submitted this year by members and volunteers from Alarro, Clever Clovers, Just for Fun, K-9 & Kompany, Pirates, Ray's Riding Rascals and School Section 4-H clubs, the Macomb County 4-H Youth Council and the Macomb County 4-H Horse Program Committee. A total of 133 votes were received. Thanks to all who participated!

Top 4-H'er change
To encourage participation and honor requests made by youth members to wear formal attire and return to the titles of King and Queen, the youth who obtains the highest score in the Top 4-H'er competition can be entitled either "King" or "Queen". The program will still be called Top 4-H'er.
Because selecting winners based on gender is in violation of Title IX, the 4-H King and Queen competition previously held was replaced by the Top 4-H'er Program in 2012. The reason for the change was never what the candidates wore or were called, but rather because the winners were selected by gender.
A Top 4-H'er is a self-motivated, enthusiastic leader who promotes 4-H using the skill, knowledge and leadership abilities acquired in 4-H with fellow members, area residents, community leaders, elected officials and non 4-H youth. A Top 4-H'er serves to strengthen the 4-H program through public relations. They are knowledgeable of 4-H, passionate and active in 4-H. There are several benefits to being a Top 4-H'er! and are due to Macomb County MSU Extension by July 1st.
4-Hers' Mark of Excellence essays chosen for state-level competition
Two Macomb County 4-H members' essays were submitted to campus for the statewide selection process. Both essays will be inducted into the Mark of Excellence binders housed at Kettunen Center and at MSU.
Taylor Frazier is an 11-year-old member of Midnight Riders 4-H Club. Taylor has been in 4-H for six years and she explores veterinary and plant sciences; outdoor education and recreation; horseless projects; swine; shooting sports (archery); community service; and food and nutrition projects. She also serves as an officer for her club.
The second member to have an essay submitted to campus is Teagan Lake. Teagan has been a member of Just-For-Fun 4-H Club for three years. Her project areas are Environmental Science and Natural Resources and Outdoor Education and Recreation, especially camping.
Macomb County 4-H GoPro!
Macomb County 4-H has purchased a GoPro for our 4-H club members to use. The camera can be borrowed by any 4-H member to use during their projects. We hope to capture footage of all sorts, from dog agility to archery and everything in-between. Want to see a lamb's point of view in the barn? Or attach it to your saddle when riding a horse? 4-H Exploration Days
4-H Exploration Days is June 21-23, 2017 at Michigan State University in East Lansing. Registration begins March 14, 2017 at your local county Extension office. Forms received earlier will be entered in the order that they are received.
Best described as a "mini-college experience" for youth who are 4-H ages 11-19, the event is an opportunity for youth to attend fun, educational sessions of their choosing, stay in campus housing (youth are housed by county), enjoy activities and entertainment and make new friends.
In Macomb County, youth can pick one roommate to join them on this experience, invite a friend and join the thousands of other youth from across the state in one of the year's most anticipated events.
The cost for this year's event is $165 per youth, plus any session fees that may apply. Non-members pay an additional $10 participation fee.
An $80 deposit is required to register. The balance may be paid on or before the orientation date. Macomb County has two orientation dates: June 5th at MSU Extension in Clinton Township and June 6th at the Max Thompson Family Resource Center in Warren.
Fall 2016 TSC Paper Clover Results
The Fall 2016 Tractor Supply 4-H Paper Clover Fundraiser results are in! From October 5-16, $871,771 was raised for 4-H across the nation. Michigan TSC stores raised a total of $43,586 to support 4-H, ranking sixth in the nation.

Use caution and good judgement when using social media
What you post online can follow you forever, so it's very important to know that what you post online can be interpreted differently than intended and/or can be shared by others, reaching people and places you're not aware of. There are documented cases where individuals have been suspended or expelled from school, lost scholarships, and even been fired from their jobs because of something they posted online.
This short video and the guidelines below from MSU Extension are designed to make you think about what you post online and to help keep you safe. The Macomb County MSU Extension staff is available to give presentations to 4-H clubs and committees about social media usage upon request. Tips to Consider Before Posting Online
1.) Who is going to see your profile? This brings in the every challenging question of who is one going to friend online. Always take the time to consider your personal boundaries and determine typical what type of information you share online and ask yourself "would I be comfortable sharing information with this person?"
2.) How closely will I monitor my privacy settings? Every social networking platform has privacy settings so it is important to know what the settings are. Then you can choose who will see what you post. Take the time to be vigilant about knowing the privacy settings of each social networking site and use the settings to help share information.
3.) What is appropriate? Unfortunately this can be a gray area as each individual has different opinions on what they consider to be appropriate and not appropriate. However, here are some questions to help people individually consider what might be appropriate:
- Is this post/story necessary? Is there a real benefit to this post-is it funny, warm-hearted, teachable-or am I just making noise online without purpose?
- Have we resolved this issue? An issue still being worked out, or one that is either vulnerable or highly emotional, should not be made public.
- How would others feel about me posting this information online? Is it appropriate? Does it stay within my personal boundaries?
- Will I stand by my posting?
- In 30 minutes, how will I feel about my post?
- Can I stand before my peers and defend my post?
- How might my posting be perceived?
- Have I considered issues of confidentiality?

Load and Go Show Pig and Club Lamb Sale
The Load and Go Show Pig and Club Lamb Sale is April 8, 2017 from 12-6 p.m. at 10455 E. Coldwater Road, Davison. The four producers that have put together this sale have been life-long 4-H members and supporters and livestock producers. Their goal is to provide 4-H and FFA members with quality animals that will do well in the show ring. The animals being sold will all have been born and raised on the producers' farms and be vaccinated and healthy. Everything will be pre-priced on the day of sale. Farm offers discount on chicks and poults for show
Macomb County 4-H Poultry Project Members
: Walnut Hill Farm in Shelby Township is offering a 25 percent discount until March 31 on chicks and poults for the fair. Breeds will include Serama, Silver Spangled Appenzeller Spitzhauben, Ayam Cemani, and Gold Wheaten Sulmtaler. Turkeys include Narragansett, Standard Bronze, Oregon Gray, Dark Gray and our own "meat line" which will grow and finish comparably to commercial Bronze or White, just a little more slowly, with better vigor, and with a variety of colors. Very limited numbers of each breed are available and will vary by hatch, buyer selects from available stock. Buyers will need to bring evidence of club and poultry project membership to receive discount. All chicks and poults will be incubated, hatched and brooded in isolation up to one week of age for biosecurity. No minimum order. Incubation and hatching services also available. Contact

Maple Tapping and Pancake Feast!
A Maple Tapping and Pancake Feasts will take place at Tollgate Farm in Novi on Saturday, March 11th and Sunday, March 12th. Attend 9 a.m.-Noon or Noon-3 p.m. All ages are welcome.
Join in for a fun, hands-on maple tapping program with a wagon ride, the history of sugaring, a tour of the sugar shack, and a robust pancake meal with real maple syrup. Preregistration is required at
Spring Break Farm Camp
Come and enjoy spring on the farm with a week of learning adventures on 160 acres of field and forest. Make new friends and enjoy fun farm-based learning together! Spring Break Farm Camp is April 3-7, 2017 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and is for children ages 6-11. The cost is $310 per person. Aftercare is offered from 4-6 for $10 per hour.
Participants will learn to care for baby goats, hatch chicks, help with morning animal chores, take afternoon hikes in the woods, harvest early produce for nutritious Garden Kitchen snacks, engage in a creative week-long STEM project, and experience lots of real science and hands-on fun!

2017 Michigan 4-H Dairy Conference
The
purposes of this annual teen and adult-leader workshop are to:
- Provide Michigan 4-H youth and volunteers from across the state with the opportunity to learn about Michigan agriculture
- Increase attendees' knowledge about the Michigan dairy industry
- Develop participants' self esteem, self awareness and leadership skills
- Help those attending to become more knowledgeable about the many issues affecting agriculture now and in the future.
- Inspire conference participants to bring new programming and ideas back to their 4-H clubs and county programs

Youth Business Guide to Success - Make the Most of Your 4-H Market Animal Project Training
What does it cost to raise a market animal? How can raising a market animal teach positive financial management? What does learning how to present and market have to do with an animal project?
Most young people in 4-H market animal projects are focused on basic animal science, care and management. But market animal projects also have the potential to teach youth valuable life skills.
Through this curriculum, youth will gain knowledge about marketing and advertising their products. Participants will also explore and practice production, management and distribution skills. In addition, it provides a venue to explore what it takes to be successful in business and view the world of animal science and agribusiness as a viable career option.
Intended for 12-19 year olds, the Youth Business Guide to Success (YBGS) curriculum is very adaptable to 4-H and non-4-H audiences working with animals.

Your 4-H Market Hog Project is available from MSU
This newly revised resource originally created in the 1980s contains swine project specific information for 4-H youth, parents and volunteers. This resource will help increase your knowledge and understanding of a variety of topics including record keeping, animal selection, early care and management, facilities and equipment, feeding and nutrition, common diseases, showing swine, pork quality assurance, animal marketing, and animal care and well-being. The completely reviewed resource will assist youth in having a well-rounded market hog experience.
4-H Goat Expo - April 15th
The Michigan 4-H Goat Expo will be held Saturday, April 15 at Anthony Hall. The event is open to youth who are 9-19 years old as of January 1, 2017. Registration fees: $6.00 participant fee and $4.00 per contest. The link to register for the contest is

State 4-H Poultry Show - May 20th
The State 4-H Poultry Show will be held on May 20, 2017 at the Eaton County Fairgrounds and is open to 4-H'ers ages 9-19 as of January 1st. Participants will gain experience in showing their 4-H bird and poultry projects. Youth will have an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge, skills and be evaluated by a highly respected judge, competing against youth from across the state. Register by April 21, 2017 at

Teens as Teachers Workshop - May 20-21
The Teens as Teachers Workshop scheduled for May 20-21, 2017 at Kettunen Center is now open for registration.
At the Teens as Teachers workshop, teen leaders (age 13-19) will gain facilitation and leadership skills that will prepare them to teach a FUN hands-on educational activity.
Each teen leader will teach the activity they learn at the training to a group of kids in their local community.
As a teen leader, you will have the advantage of being able to make learning fun and relatable to the young people you teach; serving as a role model for younger 4-H members. Teens in each track will work together to prepare, implement, evaluate and report on the progress of their local implementation of the activity in one of four tracks: Ag Innovators, Money Skills, Leadership, or Science (more track details are provided on the back of the flyer). Training and all teaching supplies will be provided.

World Food Prize Michigan Youth Institute: Engaging the next generation of hunger fighters!
The World Food Prize - Michigan Youth Institute
is an experience designed to inspire and engage youth as the next generation of hunger fighters in addressing the a variety of vital topics related to global food security! Michigan youth (in grades 8-12) select, research and write a paper about a global food security topic in a developing country of their choice. Students then present their research to peers and experts, and experience how MSU leads the way in addressing global food security, during an exciting day on the campus of
Michigan State University.
The most outstanding youth will be selected to represent Michigan as delegates to the
World Food Prize - Global Youth Institute
in Des Moines, Iowa (October 18-21, 2017) and may qualify to apply for scholarships and prestigious paid internships which will have them working side-by-side with leading food security researchers in the United States and around the world!

Students who were in grades 8 through 12 during the 2016-2017 school year are eligible to participate.

Each youth participant must complete their registration and submit a short (2-5 page) research paper at

). Teachers and adult mentors who would like to attend the Michigan Youth Institute with their student/youth must complete and submit a registration form found on the web (

). The deadline for all participants to register and for youth to submit their research papers, is March 31, 2017.
Evaluation of papers will take place prior to the May 11 program. At the event, youth will be evaluated on their individual presentations. These two factors will be the primary factors used to select Michigan's delegation to attend the World Food Prize Global Youth Institute.
The World Food Prize Global Youth Institute (WFPGYI)
The top youth participating in the Michigan Youth Institute will be selected to represent Michigan at the WFPGYI in Des Moines, Iowa, October 18 to 21, 2017. Michigan delegates will join more than 300 other outstanding students and mentors from across the country and around the world. At the event, they will interact with Nobel and World Food Prize laureates and more than 1,000 global leaders from 75 countries attending the World Food Prize's annual international symposium.
Delegates to the World Food Prize Global Youth Institute attend the program without any out-of-pocket expenses. Transportation to and from Iowa, overnight accommodations, meals, and local transportation are all provided through the financial contributions of the World Food Prize Foundation and Michigan State University.

Swine Health Recommendations for Fairs
Good Afternoon,
There have been a few questions about how to help reduce swine stress at fairs. This was an issue that was addressed throughout the Michigan Association of Fairs and Exhibitions Annual Convention and may be a focus of future conversations with local fair boards. The recommendation from Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is to have swine on the fairgrounds for only 72 hours.
Reference: To provide a better frame of reference, attached is part of the
PowerPoint that Dr. Andrew S. Bowman presented in 2016 with the CDC. The attached
graph is a great visual representation of the rationale for reducing the amount of time that pigs are at the fairs. Specifically, by limiting the number of days the pigs are on the fairgrounds, you will minimized the amount of time pigs and people are exposed to each other, therefore decreasing the spread of disease.
