St. Paul's Church

February 28, 2017

"Even now," declares the Lord, "return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning."  (Joel 2:12)

  Dear St. Paul's,

Today we will gather at the Garden Club to celebrate Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the season of Lent.  Lent is 40 days long (plus Sundays) and prepares us for Holy Week and the Lord's Resurrection.  It is a time of sober self-reflection.  The Book of Common Prayer provides this invitation:

"I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God's holy "Word."  (1979 B.C.P., p. 265)

Now is the time to turn to Jesus as never before.  St. Paul's Church is spiritually vital and strong only when we as Christians walk closely with the Savior.  Our church depends on the observance of a holy Lent.  Our nation, so wounded by deep divisions, desperately needs a citizenry which turns afresh to the compassion, mercy and holiness of Jesus.  As I repent and turn to Jesus myself, I'll be praying especially for spiritual revival in our country.  Now is the time.

And finally, during Lent, we will continue to focus on children and missions.  Through our "Give Up and Give Back" Lenten discipline, each week we will abstain from certain simple pleasures.  It may sound silly, but by doing this we can experience in a small way the immense suffering that Jesus endured for us on the Cross.  With the money we've saved by giving up alcohol, dessert, and coffee (yes coffee!), we will purchase supplies for the Belize Mission in June.

The observance of a holy Lent will help us to fulfill our mission to "bring Christ to the world by the power of the Holy Spirit."  Join us!

Gratefully in Christ,

Pr. Jon

Campaign Update

As of February 27th, we have received Building Fund pledges totaling $693,900, representing 37 family units, toward our goal of $1,350,000.  Thank you so much to everyone who has given so generously thus far.

Fortunately, the Internal Revenue Code provides some real tax breaks for charitable giving, in addition to donation deductibility for those who itemize.

For example, donations to St. Paul's Church property, such as stocks, bonds, real estate and the like, held for more than one year, which has appreciated in value over the years, may escape both capital gains and estate taxes.

For more info, please contact the church office or Dean  Sparks 772.234.2398.
