Ingalls Shipbuilding's 2016 Economic Contribution in the State of Mississippi
Written by: Jeffrey George, Graduate Assistant

Ingalls Shipbuilding 's Office of Communications & Public Affairs commissioned The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) to conduct an economic impact study to provide information pertaining to the shipyard's overall economic impact on Mississippi and the Gulf Region. Ingalls is a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries (NYSE:HII).

This report identified the number of direct, indirect, and induced jobs created by Ingalls in the Gulf Region. USM ran economic multipliers to estimate the additional jobs, earnings, and personal income taxes supported in Mississippi's economy and the Gulf Region's economy, which includes Louisiana, Alabama, and Florida. Ingalls also reported the total amount of purchases of goods and services from Mississippi-based suppliers, which was used in the input-output model to determine the multiplier effect of these inter industry interactions.

Ingalls reported state, county and local government taxes and other contributions through a detailed list of expenses in order to help calculate the total economic impact on the state, county, and local municipalities. In addition to the company's net state income, franchise, and sales taxes paid, personal income tax generated in Mississippi was included to show its impact on the state tax base.

Finally, Ingalls and its employees engage in community relations through a variety of direct sponsorship's, fundraisers, and volunteerism. These contributions were used to determine the social impact of Ingalls through initiatives that support the community.
