Life in Lent
St. Paul started the week with an inspiring Monday MorningAssembly. President Cary Dupont shared an excerpt from Pope Francis' Message for Lent, reminding us that each other person is a gift to us, as is the Word of God: "Lent is the favorable season for renewing our encounter with Christ, living in his word, in the sacraments and in our neighbor" (3).. Our community reflected on concrete ways in which we can live the traditional Lenten practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving (or works of mercy), which have their origin in the words of Jesus in the Gospel according to Matthew on Ash Wednesday.

For prayer, Mr. Dupont encouraged us to come to at least one of our weekly Masses on Thursday mornings at 7:15am in our Father Edmund O'Brien Chapel. Even if we cannot get to school on time, we can find a moment to stop in the Chapel to pray during the day. For fasting, our student-driven Social Media Task-force introduced us to the archdiocesan-wide  "I Phone Fast" movement, which involves pledging to fast from unnecessary uses of technology (e.g., social media) on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, in addition to the norms for fasting from food, so as to make more space to listen to God. For almsgiving, the newly-formed St. Paul Pro-Life Organization launched a Baby Bottle Drive in support of Carolyn's Place, a pregnancy care center in Waterbury. We will collect baby bottles during Holy Week and present them at our Mass on Wednesday that week.

All are welcome to join us for our Ash Wednesday Mass  at 10:15am  at St. Gregory the Great Parish as we begin the season of grace that is Lent!

Students Participate in National Mathematics Competition

Twenty students at SPCHS were nominated and participated in the 68th annual American Mathematics Contest 12, and the 18th annual American Mathematics Contest 10.  The contests were held at SPCHS on Wednesday, February 15th.

The AMC 12 is one in a series of examinations (followed in the United States by the American Invitational Examination, AIME and the USA Mathematical Olympiad) that culminate in participation in the International Mathematical Olympiad, the most prestigious and difficult secondary mathematics examination in the world.

One purpose of the AMC 12 is to identify those few students with truly exceptional mathematics talent. This contest will provide students with some indication of how they stand relative to other students in the country and around the world.
