The Woodlawn News

The heavy snowstorms in mid-February brought hundreds of people to Woodlawn for sledding on the front lawn for school vacation week.  It was great to see kids of all ages running down the yard with sleds in hand and smiles on their faces.

Our March office days are filled with planning. We are coordinating with area schools to bring hundreds of students to Woodlawn starting in May.  August may seem a long way off, but our planning for the Ellsworth Antiques Show is well underway.

We have been holding community lunches over the past several weeks to talk with businesses and schools about our our current activities and plans for the future.  If you would be interested in attending an upcoming lunch, please call our office at 667-8671 and speak with Joanna or Phyllis.

We invite you to share this newsletter with family and friends. The newsletter is published for the community and can be accessed by clicking below.
Woodlawn to be topic of March public forum in Ellsworth

The Heart of Ellsworth (formerly known as Downtown Ellsworth Association) has invited Woodlawn executive director, Joshua Torrance to present on Woodlawn, Wednesday, March 8, at 6:00 pm in the Riverview Room at the Ellsworth Public Library on State Street.

Torrance will share some of Woodlawn's history, its current activities and plans for the future, which include the reconstruction of the estate's carriage barn into a community-gathering place.  Admission is free and the forum is open to the public.  Light refreshments will be served.

February was all about sledding at Woodlawn

February got off to a slow start with the snow, but it really came to the forefront just in time for the City of Ellsworth's Winter Carnival.  Woodlawn was the place to be on Saturday, Feb. 11 when the cardboard sled racers took to the front lawn.  The Ellsworth Snowmobile Club offered a different kind of sled ride as they took people around the trails and fields.  Patti Cakes Bakery Truck was on site with warm drinks and sweet treats and Star 97.7 held a live remote from our Sleigh Barn.

Winter carnival rides by the Ellsworth Snowmobile club
The Ellsworth Snowmobile Club returned on the Thursday before school vacation week to groom the hill after the blizzard and in preparation for the  Ellsworth Middle School's Winter Carnival that included sledding at Woodlawn. Watch a video of the grooming effort on their FaceBook page.

During school vacation week, the
Downeast Family YMCA brought their kids for outdoor fun, and many families visited throughout the week. We often say we are the sledding capital of Downeast Maine, and this February we certainly were!

Dayli ght savings returns on March 12th
Don't forget to turn your clock

On Sunday, March 12th daylight savings time returns, much to the delight of many Mainers. After the short winter days, the extended daylight into the evening hours offers a welcome change.

Changing the clocks at Woodlawn is an interesting task as we have quite an assortment of clocks. Pictured is a beautiful mantle clock that is in the Black House library. It was made in Paris, France and belonged to General David Cobb, Mary Black's father.  There are three tall clocks in the collection, one by Aaron Willard of Massachusetts and two by John Barr of Port Glasgow, Scotland. All three tall clocks are mahogany and beautifully constructed.  The Aaron Willard clock was a gift to John Black from General Henry Jackson.  Aaron Willard was the primary member of the most famous family of early American clockmakers.

The Black House opens for the season on May 1st.  We invite you to come for a tour and have a closer look.
