Uninsured... and... Undiagnosed
Recently, a 55 year old woman with thyroid problems came to Barnabas Health Services to establish a relationship with a primary care provider.  She had not seen a healthcare provider in many years due to lack of insurance. The patient was complaining of excessive thirst, increased urination and fatigue for many months.  She was examined and found to have Diabetes, significant hypothyroidism, and her blood pressure was very elevated.  Her total cholesterol was over 350!  Medical therapy was initiated for all of her problems. The patient was seen every two weeks and attended our Diabetes class to understand and achieve her goal blood sugar readings.  At her last appointment her thyroid was back to normal, blood pressure was at goal, cholesterol came down 200 points with medications, and her blood sugars have been between 100 and 170.  The patient is feeling much better.  She has started exercising regularly and is doing very well.  She is very grateful for the care she has received through Barnabas' Primary Care program.  This is another example of Barnabas fulfilling its Mission by connecting people, help and hope!
Honor Your Mother - Mother's Day is May 10
Honor your mother--whether living or deceased--with the gift of health to a woman in need. Your support enables Barnabas to provide essential services to women who are experiencing a loss of employment, health insurance or other crises.

Early diagnosis saves lives.  A gift of $25, $50, $100 or more can provide a mammogram, PAP smear, gynecological exam or some other health exam to a woman in need.  Barnabas also provides mental health counseling, dental services, vision and hearing screening.  At Barnabas, we believe financial hardship is no longer a reason to be without quality health services, including early diagnosis.

Consider making a gift to Barnabas in honor or in memory of your mother.  This Mother's Day gift can make a big difference to a local woman in need.  Just click on the green "Donate Now" button to the right of this article.  It's that easy!

Volunteers Needed!

U.S. Post Office "Stamp Out Hunger" Food Drive

Saturday, May 9, will see the annual U.S. Postal Carriers "Stamp Out Hunger" Food Drive. This is the Nation's largest single-day food drive.  Barnabas partners with  Nassau County's letter carriers to collect generous food donations from Nassau County residents for distribution to those in need.  We will need lots of volunteers to assist with the unloading, sorting, boxing and lifting of donated food.  If you would like to volunteer to help, please contact Barbara Herring at (904) 261-7000 ext. 118 or email bherring@barnabasnassau.org.

Save the Date! Empty Bowls is November 6, 2015!

We are very excited to announce a repeat of last year's successful luncheon, Empty Bowls.  The event will raise much needed funds for Barnabas programs and generate good will and interest on behalf of hunger and poverty across our community.  The event will be held Friday, November 6, at the Atlantic Recreation Center from 12-1:30 pm.

What exactly is EMPTY BOWLS? An empty bowl is the symbol of hunger.  In support of our neighbors coping with poverty and hunger, Barnabas is hosting a simple meal of soup, bread, and dessert contributed by local businesses.  Tickets are $30 and attendees get a free handcrafted bowl to take home as a reminder of all the empty bowls remaining in our community and in the world.

Paint For Fun! Paint For Hunger! Fill A Need!
It all starts with a plain white bowl.  Add paint, glaze, fellowship, and your own sense of design!  To get ready for Empty Bowls, Barnabas needs volunteers for the following three activities:

1.  Come to a bowl painting party. Barnabas has parties scheduled in the Food Pantry on Tuesday, May 5, from 5-7 pm and on Monday, May 18, from 4-6 pm.  RSVP to attend one or both of thee parties by phoning (904)261-7000 or email info@barnabasnassau.org.

2.  Host a bowl painting party (a party in your home, church, at Barnabas, etc.).  Invite your friends!  Have fun!  Help Barnabas!

3.  Be a "Bowl Angel".  Be an angel and write a check to help make the parties happen.

For more information on participating in our bowl painting effort, contact Gloria Hamilton at (706)294-3408 or email gioham@comcast.net.

New To You Cast & Crew

April showers not only brought May flowers but fabulous donations to New To You as well.  We are so blessed to be a part of such a giving community.  Our clothing selections are trendy and stylish.  Our furniture and home décor selections are finding new homes quickly.  And our linens and electronics leave every day.

The entire Barnabas staff honored our volunteers at the Volunteer Appreciation party on April 20th.  New To You staff were there in full force serving, cleaning, bartending and helping in any way we could.  Everyone had a great time! We are honored to have such a wonderful volunteer  presence at New To You.  Our volunteers work very hard helping us process donations and get them to the sales floor as quickly as possible, and we are very grateful for their time.  We love you all!!!
