2017 TIANB Annual Summit Update

As we get closer to our annual event we want to keep you informed and reminded of the many exciting elements of our Annual Summit this year.

Please be reminded of the important information below:

        More tax savings!

Did you know the cost associated with TIANB's Summit may be tax deductible? The Income Tax Act (ITA) states that you may deduct the costs of two conventions in any one year. The conventions must be related to your business and located where the sponsor conducts its business. Since beverages, food or entertainment are included in the Summit price, you would be required to deduct $50.00 a day for these expenses from your claim for the registration fee, where  the 50% rule applies to these type of expenses.

Let's illustrate this with an example. Shelley attended a two day TIANB Summit that cost her $265.00. The amount for meals and entertainment was not itemized. Shelley's convention expense would be $165.00 ($265.00 - 50x2).  Shelley can also claim a meal and entertainment expense of $50.00 (50x2x50%).

You should be able to prove your attendance to TIANB's Summit and support this expense with an invoice from TIANB to benefit from this tax savings.

Tourism Technology

Have you claimed your Google "My Business" page?

Recently, TIANB attended a meeting of the Albert County Tourism Association where a  gentleman announced that it was a good idea for everyone to claim their business listing on Google. It's a very good idea and we are glad he mentioned it; it was something we had been taking for granted that people already knew about. So to correct our assumption, let's learn about your My Business page now.

Google My Business is "a free and easy-to-use tool for businesses, brands, artists, and organizations to manage their online presence across Google, including Search and Maps," so says Google. It's not complicated, and claiming your business will ensure Google lists your current information. You can even add pictures, list your hours of operation (specify if you're closed for the season), and respond to online reviews. It will also prevent unwanted changes to your listing from 3 rd -party sources (something that anyone can do quite easily unless you have claimed your listing).

To "claim" your listing simply means you've proven to Google that you own or represent the business. You can do this by phone, text, or postal letter. By verifying and editing your business information, you can both help customers find you and tell them the story of your business.

Visit www.google.com/business/ to take control over your listing today.

If you have questions about this or anything else technology related, please contact Jason Farris, any time by phone (1-800-668-5313) or email ([email protected]). He loves hearing from our members.

Tourism Tips
Phone Call (Scam) -
Universal Media

Several tourism operators in the province are receiving calls from  "Universal Media" stating, person calling is now handling our account for shipping the "Official NB 2017 guide" .

Message from a TIANB member:

I received a call from "Universal Media" stating that this person is now handling our account for shipping the "Official NB 2017 guide".  They start by wanting to update your contact information & asked for your 800 number. When asked why they need that information and asking them to verify if they are from the "Official Tourism NB 2017 guide," which they assure you they are, I asked if there is a fee for the shipment; they responded with, yes -  $599 & this includes my free listing. When questioned and asked for their name and contact information they quickly hung up.
