Rev. Laurie's Message

We've just celebrated the end of the Epiphany season on February 26th, a time in the Church year when we reflect on the signs that tell us of Christ's Messiah-hood.  Epiphany is a time of "showing forth."  Presaged by a star and Magi from the East, we follow Jesus' baptism, the calling of his first disciples, the Sermon on the Mount, and other key teachings. This season culminates with Jesus' Transfiguration, his appearance with Moses and Elijah, and God's reaffirmation that this is his Beloved Son.

On Tuesday, February 28th, we held a Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper.  Many countries and traditions celebrate Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday (also known as Shrove Tuesday), on the final day of the Epiphany season, as a last opportunity to use up the oil in the house. Oil is a symbol of abundance, and the movement is now toward the more penitential Lenten time of fasting and prayer.  Lent is the forty-day period preceding Easter, which began on Ash Wednesday, March 1, 2017.  You will note, if you count the days on a calendar, the six Sundays of Lent are omitted.  This is because each Sunday is a remembrance and celebration of the Resurrection.  The forty days of Lent represent the forty days Jesus spent in the wilderness.  They are a time of reflection and soul-searching leading up to our celebration of Easter.  At this time of year, many people fast or give up a particular food or habit in order to honor this time of preparation.

Another way you might observe a Lenten discipline is by taking on something new.  If you're not in the habit of daily prayer, I would invite you to consider setting aside ten minutes a day for conversation with God.  This can be as simple as sitting in a quiet place.  You might wish to begin your prayer time by reading a passage from Scripture and then taking that reading into your prayer.  Or you might simply acknowledge God's presence with you, place before him your needs and petitions, as well as your thanksgivings, and then sit in that presence and listen.  You may hear some remarkable things in this type of prayer.

Another type of prayer that I've found meaningful comes from St. Ignatius.  It is called the examen, which in Spanish means "examination".  As you sit quietly, look back over the people and events of your day, your thoughts, your feelings and your actions.  As you do so, you may find a particular moment of your day that provides new insight into what God wishes for you in his kingdom here on earth.  If something comes up for you, just stay with it.  You don't need to complete the whole day.  Maybe that one moment is the pearl of great price that God offers you. I pray for each of us a Holy Lent.

Our New Church Home

Our church on Double R Boulevard is proving to be a blessing to our congregation in so many ways.  The Ministry Teams that have previously been setting up and taking down all of their materials each week no longer need to do so.  The Sign Ministry is ever so much simpler and will become even more so once we have a permanent sign approved by the Association.  Altar Guild has a space of their own and can leave things at-the-ready to set the table and prepare for services.  Our ushers and greeters can leave all of the greeting materials and name tags in place for the next week.  Our nursery and Godly Play have a dedicated room where all is in readiness for our youngest congregants.  The Hospitality Ministry has coffee hour items already set up for services with the need to only fill the coffee pot and plug it in.

As we live into our new space, many more blessings will accrue, not the least of which is the ability to welcome new people who don't yet know about us.  There are many of you who read our newsletter "religiously" (pun intended!) each month.  If you haven't taken the time to stop by on a Sunday to see our new worship space, we hope you'll do so!  It will be a blessing to welcome you in the name of Christ.

A word of thanks to all of our volunteers who have worked so hard over our ten years at Bishop Manogue to make an inviting place for worship, education and hospitality, and then put it all away as if we hadn't been there...you are awesome!

Parking at Our New Location

We would like to ask those of you/us who are able to move about a little more freely to please leave the seven parking spaces directly in front of the doors available for those who may have a few more challenges in walking.

There will be ample parking around our building on Sundays, and it's all relatively close.  Please note that there are two handicapped parking spots on the west side of the building, and a ramp for wheelchairs that should make access easier... another perk of our new building!  You also don't need to be Goliath to open the front door!
