New Issues with Olympus Scopes

Doctors have tied a superbug outbreak at a foreign health facility to a medical scope that
Olympus modified last year in an attempt to reduce its risk of spreading bacteria between patients.
Five patients treated with the modified device tested positive for the same potentially deadly bacteria, according to a report filed with the
Food and Drug Administration.
One of those patients died, but the report blamed the death on the person's pre-existing condition rather than the infection.

According to the author:
American hospitals are currently using about 4,400 of the devices that Olympus voluntarily recalled last year to replace a small mechanism linked to deadly outbreaks around the world...
Lawrence Muscarell, a medical safety expert in Montgomeryville, PA, said the outbreak raises questions about whether Olympus' recall and replacement of the mechanism was enough to keep patients safe.

ACP: Medical profession must examine and address ethical use of EHRs and health IT

On
3.21.17 the
American College of Physicians (ACP)
announced that a new position paper had been published in the
Journal of General Internal Medicine. In the paper produced by ACP's Ethics, Professionalism, and Human Rights Committee, "Ethical Implications of the Electronic Health Record: In the Service of the Patient," ACP addresses how EHRs can best serve the patient-physician relationship and patient care; patient autonomy, privacy, and confidentiality; and professionalism, clinical reasoning, and training.

"Electronic health records can aid in the delivery of high quality care to patients," said
Nitin S. Damle, MD, MS, MACP, president, ACP. "However, health information technology also poses unintended ethical concerns that the medical profession must examine and address."
