As winter gradually gives way to spring, we invite you to take part in engaging gallery talks and events that provide new insights into our ongoing exhibitions. Also, please join us on March 30th for the opening of Urban Impressions: New York City in Prints, 1900-1940. As always, the Bowdoin College Museum of Art celebrates the achievements of artistic practitioners from around the world, and later this month, our programming places a special emphasis on the art of Japan and the contributions of Chuzo Tamotzu, a Japanese-born artist who organized an international exchange of drawings between students in the United States and Japan. As always, the arts provide new perspectives, historic and contemporary, on the world around us. We look forward to seeing you at the Museum!

The Temptation of Saint Anthony

Closing March 19, 2017

Saint Anthony (ca. 251-356), often regarded as the founder of Christian monasticism, was a hermit in the Egyptian desert who, according to his biographer Athanasius of Alexandria, was tormented by supernatural appearances. This exhibition presents renderings of Saint Anthony's visions since the late medieval period.

Perspectives from Postwar Hiroshima: Chuzo Tamotzu, Children's Drawings, and the Art of Resolution

Closing April 16, 2017

This selection of works by Japanese children and by the Japanese-American artist Chuzo Tamotzu (1887-1975) explores the legacy of an art exchange between elementary school students in Santa Fe and Hiroshima in the early 1950s. The project was conceived by Tamotzu, who was born in Japan and came of age as an artist in the United States.

Museum Acquires Monhegan Seascape by George Bellows

The Museum is excited to announce the acquisition of George Bellow's Green Breaker, an oil on panel that the artist created on Maine's Monhegan Island in 1913. The painting was given by G. Remak Ramsay, an actor who has spent many summers in Maine. Green Breaker is the first oil painting by Bellows to enter the Museum's collection and complements well other modernist paintings created on Monhegan by artists such as Rockwell Kent and Leon Kroll. We are deeply grateful for this generous gift.
Modern Medieval: Materiality and Spirituality in German Expressionist Prints

Modern Medieval: Materiality and Spirituality in German Expressionist Prints opened to the public on February 16th and will be on view until June 4th.  Highlighting the BCMA's diverse permanent collection, the exhibition juxtaposes early twentieth-century German prints with late-medieval objects, presenting a unique perspective on western medieval culture's influence on German Expressionism.
