Prohibition on Flammable Liquids in Plastic Totes
by Matthew Taylor-Rennert, Dalkita Architecture & Construction
Plastic IBC tote

What Are IBC Plastic Totes and what is prohibited from being stored in them?

If you've been to a few distilleries, you might have seen these around: Large plastic IBC (intermediate bulk container) totes.

IBC totes are lightweight, come in a variety of sizes (often seen in 275 gallons or more), and are affordable. They are great for storing water and some other nonhazardous liquids, but they are actually prohibited by code to be used to store certain flammable liquids inside buildings, including alcohol over about 16% ABV   Read more.

Vancouver Island hotspots for getting into the spirits
by  Nancy Besharah, San Francisco Chronicle
Bottles and barrels at de Vine Spirits_
Bottles and barrels at de Vine Spirits, a craft distillery on Vancouver Island near Victoria.

Emily Henderson carefully pours 2 ounces of de Vine Moderna vermouth, the flavor of which has been influenced by no fewer than 31 botanicals, from sarsaparilla to mint to local spruce tips. "And it's medicinal," she says.

They're sipping something memorable in Victoria, British Columbia, and it's not just afternoon tea at the Empress Hotel anymore. Distillers are using wild-harvested botanicals, B.C. fruits, and ancient grains to produce certified craft spirits including gin, vodka, and single malt whiskey with a flavor profile unique to the Pacific Northwest. De Vine's vermouth is one of many products putting Vancouver Island on the map as a center of premium artisanal spirits, and Henderson likens the innovative local distillers to artists experimenting with colors. Some could be masterpieces. Read more

Could you be a Ricker Rider?
Story by Sam Slaughter, Photos by Amy Ellis, Bitter Southerner
Rick house barrel loading

Maybe you've been in a Kentucky warehouse where bourbon ages in huge barrels racked many stories high. But did you think about the person whose job it is to get each of those quarter-ton barrels perfectly in place? That person is called a ricker rider. Today, we take you to Four Roses Distillery to meet one of the best: Keith Downs.

Nine a.m., and it's hot already, the stickiness and humidity of a Kentucky July already creeping into the Four Roses bourbon aging and bottling facility in Cox's Creek, Kentucky. While the actual making of the distiller's bourbon happens 50 miles away in Lawrenceburg, the real magic - the years the whiskey spends aging, interacting with the charred-oak barrels that are essential to bourbon becoming bourbon - happens here. The PicoStill Is Revealed at CES  by Hadley Tomicki, UrbanDaddy

Very few of us probably have room for a copper pot still in our kitchens.

But an intriguing new path to distilling your own booze in a relatively small package may have emerged at the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas.

The PicoStill can indeed fit on your kitchen counter and, with the right knowledge, a person could distill many different kinds of booze with it. The device was apparently developed as a method for making hop oils for beer, and is intended to work as an attachment the company's at-home beer brewing devices.

San Luis Obispo County building inspector builds his own distillery  by Karen Garcia, New Times SLO
Todd Adams is a building inspector for San Luis Obispo County by day_ but he operates his hole-in-the-wall distillery in his free time.

Driving down the main road in Los Osos you wouldn't be able to find Foggy Bottom Distillery at first or even know it was there to begin with.

"You really have to want to come here to find this place," said Todd Adams, owner and operator of the distillery.

Foggy Bottom Distillery is tucked away to the side of the building that's home to Hong Kong Chinese and Martin's Mexican restaurants-but if you look close enough, you'll find the sign to its entrance off Los Osos Valley Road.
