Notes from Ms. Dahnke

Control Issues

Today has been one of those days. You know the kind I am talking about. You make specific plans to get things done and you may even have a list of those things and timeline for them to get done, but it does not always work out the way you had planned. For example, here is a run-down of the day's events...so far. This morning, we had someone in to work on the computers and the Wifi that seemed to be sluggish. The technician was going from one office to another in order to work on the issue and solve the problem. As he was doing that, we were discussing the fact that the fire department had been called here last night for what we figured to be a false alarm or a faulty detector.

Just about that time, the fire alarm went off for what seemed like forever. We usually try to schedule our alarms around naps, lunch, and other scheduled events. This time, however, there was no warning. Everyone evacuated the building and the fire department came in ready to put out the fire. The fire department just left again, for the third time today. The alarm company has been here and all is well with the alarms. In the meantime, there is a water pipe in one of the bathrooms that seems to be leaking.

So, it is noon and things that were to be done are still sitting there and the day is half over. We have done a lot of laughing today because these things are not in anyone's control and everyone is safe and sound, which is most important. Days like today show us that we have very little control over our daily events and circumstances, regardless of the choices we choose to make or how much we like to believe we control it all.

Clearly, days like today remind us that God is in control and God alone knows what is going to happen today. In my small little world, I figure that God does not get too involved in the little things like leaky water pipes, slow computers, and faulty smoke detectors. However, then I look around and I see the uniqueness of each student and the intricate details of each person's face, hands, feet, and even hair, I realize that God is a master of little details. He cares about even the tiniest of details and they mean a lot to Him.

We like to think that we have everything under control and then life begins to prove us wrong. We go to college or to a job, get married, have children who grow to be teenagers and soon leave the "nest" or marry and move away. We do not always have control of all those plans. Worse yet, we plan for a trip or a holiday get-together or retirement and someone gets sick. Little things make us realize that we are not in control and big things can devastate us unless we look to the one who always has control and is "already there" to lead us and guide us and care for us.

LIfe can throw us a curveball in many different ways and in many different forms. We can plan and schedule and plan some more but in the end, God is in control and even though He has given us freewill to make decisions and plans for our lives, He will ultimately point us in the direction in which He wants us to go. It might be painful to get there, but He will be with us as we maneuver through this thing called life.

God is good, all the time and all the time, God is good!
The Book Fair Will Be Open Soon
The Book Fair is coming up soon. Books will be delivered on Wednesday and will be up for sale from Monday, Mar. 13 - Friday, Mar. 17.

This year, we will be holding the Book Fair in the school library. To do this, we could still use some volunteers to help set-up, tear-down, and actually ring up sales during the week and especially on Grandparents' Day, March 17.

I f you check out the link below, you can volunteer to sign up (times are tentative and subject to change), order books online, and just see what the Book Fair has to offer. Help us make a difference for our classroom libraries and for our school library.

Sign up HERE to volunteer or to look at and purchase books. Thank you in advance for your help in building our libraries and our students' love for books.

Volunteer Hours
Each family is required to volunteer for 6 hours a year whether the family has a child in the CCC or a student at BCA. The deadline for these hours is coming upon us quickly. March 31 is the deadline but there is plenty of opportunity to get those done by then. Please continue to talk with your student's classroom teacher or read the weekly newsletter for suggestions and areas of need. If you have fulfilled your hours, please make sure to get a volunteer form from your student's classroom and hand it in so you can be credited. Many hands make light work and we appreciate all you do for BCA/CCC.

3rd Marking Period
We are almost at the end of the 3rd marking period already. Can you believe it? As the weather gets nicer, our students get less and less interested in completing assignments and studying for tests. If you do nothing else at night, please encourage your student to be diligent in their work and if they have nothing, to read for a set length of time each night. If you feel your student needs additional help, please let his/her teacher know so that we can work to help.

Spring Break and Early Dismissals
As we get closer to spring break, it is more likely that some of our students will be leaving early for vacation. If you will be taking your student out early, please make sure that you have notified his/her teacher as well as the front office so that we can keep accurate records. We believe that family time is important but we just need to know and account for our students.

Annual BCA Arts Night and Middle School Play, Snow White
Our students have been working hard on their art projects and our middle school students have been practicing our spring play, Snow White for quite a while so that we can provide you with a night of the arts. Plan to attend this special night on Thursday, March 16, beginning at 6:30 p.m. with your students. More details to follow next week. (Students may not attend without parental supervision.)
