Question #5:
Is it too Late to Plant Strawberries?
Mmmmm....There is certainly nothing better then that first ripe, red strawberry of the year. Strawberries are the first fruits to ripen in the spring, and no other small plant produces berries as quickly after planting as strawberries. If you are a strawberry fan like me, it is not too late to grow some delicious berries of your own! Strawberry varieties best adapted to North Carolina obviously grow best here, but more adventurous gardeners may wish to try their hand with newer strawberry varieties from other areas. Keep in mind though while shopping, that it is very rare for a variety bred for the Middle Atlantic, New England, or Canada to be suitable here. Varieties that are suitable for North Carolina include: Sweet Charlie, Chandler, Camarosa, Earliglow, Atlas, Apollo, and Titan. Personal preference, however, will dictate the choice of strawberry varieties that most people plant.
