Th Children's Hospital of Michigan's Department of Medical Education has been recognized for their hard work in coordinating the data required for the hospital's recent institutional review of its residency and fellowship training programs. The ACGME is a private not-for-profit organization that sets standards for United States graduate medical education programs and the institutions that sponsor them, and renders accreditation decisions based on compliance with these standards.

WeldingFSGS Doesn't Stop Teen From Developing a Future in Welding

Molly, now a high school graduate

As a mother of four, Meg will tell you not every path is the same for every child. For her youngest daughter, Molly, a kidney disorder diagnosis when she was eight years old sparked a love and hidden talent for welding that may have never been discovered otherwise.

As a young child, Molly was often sick. "I was especially concerned when Molly was screaming and crying and said she wanted to go to the hospital. What seven year old child tells you that?" says Meg.

Molly was admitted to the Children's Hospital of Michigan a day before her eighth birthday and doctors determined she had nephrotic syndrome.  The news was distressing.  Testing confirmed Molly a serious kidney disease called focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS).  Without treatment, FSGS may lead to kidney failure where the only treatment options are dialysis or possibly a kidney transplant.

MotherSonMother and Son Manage Congenital Heart Conditions Through Lifetime of Care

Tasha and Caleb

Tasha, a Saginaw, MI native, had a difficult start to life with three major heart surgeries -- the first being when she was just one week old. Thanks to the Children's Hospital of Michigan and her care team, Tasha can live a relatively uninhibited life.

However, one of the things she was originally advised not to do was have a child, as her doctors warned her there may be risks involved.  After much discussion, Tasha was finally given the "thumbs up" by her care team and gave birth to two sons.  Her youngest, Caleb, however, was more similar to Tasha than she realized.  During a checkup, doctors found that Caleb had the same heart defect as his mother.

Twists and Turns: What to do about Scoliosis and Spinal Deformities

 Walid K. Yassir, M.D.

If your patient has a curved spine, rest assured he or she is not alone. About three out of every 100 people have some form of scoliosis. Spinal deformities in kids are commonly managed in the Department of Orthopedics at the Children's Hospital of Michigan. The most common spinal deformities are scoliosis (curved spine) and kyphosis (hunchback).

The Children's Hospital of Michigan offers comprehensive surgical and non-surgical treatment options for kids and young adults with spinal deformities.  "Treatment goals for spinal deformity should aim to stop progression, normalize spinal function and minimize pain," says Walid Khaled Yassir, M.D., M.H.C.M., Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at the Children's Hospital of Michigan.

For those requiring surgery, options include growth-friendly instrumentation such as MAGEC (MAGnetic Expansion Control), magnetically lengthening growing rods for younger children to avoid repeated surgeries. This is designed to correct the curvature and stop the progression so that get kids can get back to their normal activities.
