From the Rector

Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Mary's,

As we enter in the season of Lent, my prayer is that each one of you will take some time out of your busy schedule to recharge your spiritual batteries. Lent is a season that invites us into a time of self-reflection, meditation prayer, and the study of scriptures. It is time to prepare ourselves for Easter and to renew our spiritual commitment concerning what it means to be a Christian in the world today. Many people have the tradition of giving up something for Lent as a Lenten discipline. You may also consider adding something to your life this season, which can enrich your spiritual development. I invite you to consider attending our 5-week Lenten Thursday dinner discussions beginning March 9 th .   In addition to having lively discussion and time for prayer, it is a good way to get to know people in the parish and form deeper connections. We will be using the book and the CD called "The Passion", which you may read more about in this newsletter.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mike Higgins and the men of the parish for once again hosting a wonderful Shrove Tuesday pancake supper. It was a great time.

Please mark your calendar for our next Community Meal, which will happen on Saturday, March 18. Dinner is served from 5:00-7:00 p.m. This is a good opportunity to invite your friends, and to make new friends. We need you to come and dine with us and greet people from the community. As you know, our last two meals were a wonderful success serving 70-75 persons and engaging many volunteers from the wider community. We also have been able to cover all of our expenses with the free will donations. God has richly blessed us with this new ministry and I thank all of you who have participated and volunteered and those who have given donations. This is a great way to support your church.

See you all on Sunday,
Fran +

5-Week Lenten Soup Supper, & Study
The Passion: A Cantata of Jesus' Death
Beginning Thursday, March 9     ~     6:30-8:15 p.m.

Marcus Hummon, a Grammy award winning singer/songwriter, has created a cantata of the last days of Jesus, based on the narratives of the Gospels.   Each week we will hear a scripture passage and the musical piece he has written for that passage. There is an also an accompanying book, written by Marcus, and his wife, Becca Stevens. Becca is an Episcopal priest, a 2016 CNN Hero Award winner, and the founder of Thistle Farms/Magdalene, one of the most successful Social Enterprises in the US. In the book, Marcus and Becca offer the musical history of each piece, as well as reflections on its theological significance.   We will use the CD and book together in our discussions each week.

If you wish to participate please sign up so that we will have enough books . We are asking for a donation of $5 to help defray the cost. (If you prefer a digital copy, it is available on Amazon.com, or Cokesbury.com.)

In addition, please sign up to bring soup, salad, or bread to one or more of our evenings .   Invite a friend! Questions? Speak with Rev. Fran.

Sign-up sheets are located on the display in the Great Hall.

Living Well Through Lent
" Listening With All Your Heart, Soul, Strength, and Mind "

Lent is a time for introspection and self-reflection, a time to become intentional about listening more deeply to God, ourselves, and others. This booklet provides a foundation to help us explore a deeper connection between faith and our capacity to listen to God.   Each day of the week begins with a scripture or quote, followed by a reflection, and an invitation to record any thoughts, feelings, or insight, and  each Sunday offers a reflection written by a featured writer.   Please pick your free copy, available in the Narthex.
Mobile Food Truck:
Lenten Outreach Opportunity

The Mobile Food Truck at St. Paul's, McHenry is a wonderful ministry that only takes a few hours of your time, and is open to ALL ages. On a table in the church Narthex, there are bags with a "wish list" of personal items attached. Please take a bag and fill it with as many items as you'd like.   We will continue this collection throughout the season of Lent.   Please return the filled bag to St. Mary's by Easter Sunday, April 16   On Saturday, April 29, these bags of personal items will be handed out to families in need, in addition to the bags of groceries from the Illinois Food Bank.   Thanks in advance for your help!!!

March Community Meal

We had a great turn-out and wonderful time at our first monthly free Community Meal in February.  Our next free meal will be served on March 18th. This meal is offered the 3rd Saturday of every month, and ALL ARE WELCOME .  Invite your friends, family, and neighbors!  It's a chance to have dinner and conversation with friends you know, and perhaps make new friends from the community.   Mark your calendars and join us on Saturday, March 18

This is an amazing opportunity to reach beyond our walls and into the community.  If you would like to volunteer, please sign up in the Great Hall, or speak with Rev. Fran, or Tracy Higgins.
