Communicating with parents on vaccination issues
The Michigan Osteopathic Association (MOA) is part of a coalition of healthcare organizations dedicated to raising awareness and providing education on vaccination issues in our communities. As part of the coalition, we invite our members and interested healthcare professionals to take part in an educational webcast program titled -
Vaccine Confidence: The Key to Communicating with Parents and Patients.
This program will explore the wide range of individual attitudes and beliefs about immunizations and offer guidance in responding to specific questions and concerns about vaccines.
Presenters are Gary Marshall, MD, Professor of Pediatrics and Chief of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, and Carole Moloney, RN, MSN, CPNP, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and Clinical Instructor in Pediatrics at Boston University School of Medicine. They will identify and provide solutions for the key issues that arise in vaccine conversations with parents of pediatric and adolescent patients.
The webcast will be offered within a 60-minute time-frame, which includes a formal presentation plus a live question-and-answer session with the faculty. Sessions will be offered on the following dates and times:

Thursday, March 9 at 12 pm EDT
Tuesday, March 14 at 3 pm EDT

Revamped MAPS Launch Timeline
The State of Michigan will be replacing the Michigan Automated Prescription System (MAPS) with Appriss, PMP AWARxE software.
Important Information:
- Accounts from the current MAPS will not be transferred to the new system.
- Beginning March 9, 2017, pre-registration to PMP AWARxE will open to setup your new MAPS account.
- All requests and reporting will be made to the current system through April 3, 2017.
Key Dates:
- March 9, 2017: PMP AWARxE registration available for new MAPS platform.
- April 3, 2017: Last day to submit requests and/or file submissions to the existing MAPS.
- April 4, 2017: All requests and reporting must go through the new system. Current MAPS accounts will no longer be accessible.

MHA Hosts Patient Safety & Quality Symposium
The Michigan Health and Hospital Association (MHA) is once again hosting the Patient Safety & Quality Symposium. The event draws more than 300 healthcare providers as well as medical and business executives to share innovative ideas on how to make healthcare better and safer. The symposium covers a wide array of topics, including high reliability in healthcare, person and family engagement, developing a culture of safety, the role of transparency in patient safety, and more.

Medicare Advantage Health Plan Requirements:
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan with FAQ on what Providers need to know for compliance
Last year, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) mandated that Medicare Advantage health plans provide complete and accurate information regarding physicians to members. If a plan fails to provide accurate provider directories, it's subject to compliance or enforcement actions, including civil monetary penalties and Medicare star ratings or enrollment sanctions. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM) has put together a great list of Frequently Asked Questions for providers on how they can confirm their directory information in one place, where it can be shared with participating health plans and will meet BCBSM quarterly directory attestation requirement.
Compliance is vital. If non-compliance continues, providers could be terminated from Blue Cross and BCN networks.

Call for Nominations: 2017 Exceptional Service Award in Adult Immunization
Do you know of an individual, clinical practice, or organization that goes above and beyond to promote immunization for their adult population? The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) would like to recognize their commitment. The award criteria includes:
- The nominee works to make immunization a standard of routine adult care
- The nominee applies the principles of the Standards for Adult Immunization Practice
- The nominee works to increase vaccine access in adult populations

Five Keys to Managing Online Criticism
No matter how professional and caring a doctor you may be, eventually you will face criticism on the web. Here are five keys to managing that criticism:
1. Listen to the criticism.
Patients may leave online reviews because they feel this is the only way they can have a voice. By listening to online criticism, you can identify and fix easily correctable situations and improve patients' satisfaction scores.
2. Take critical conversations offline.
Whenever you see criticism on the web, there's a strong temptation to respond to it immediately. You want to set the record straight and clear the air. Instead, take the conversation offline. An online argument is unlikely to result in anything productive. Post a standard reply thanking the patient for the comment and asking him or her to call the clinic. Be careful not to reveal any private patient information.
3. Read the fine print.
If you believe any online comments are suspicious, contact the rating site to see if the comments violate the terms of service agreement.
4. Ask more patients to rate you online.
Most patients generally like their doctors, and dozens of studies show that a majority of online ratings are positive. By asking more patients to rate you online, you can make negative ratings look more like outliers. Ask your patients to post a review if there's something they like about you or what your practice is doing, or if they have any suggestions for your practice. Don't cherry-pick patients or pressure them to say something positive about your practice, but ask for a rating from every single patient in a low-key and low-pressure way.
5. Resist the urge to sue.
Only rarely have doctors successfully sued rating sites, which may argue that removing negative ratings is an infringement of a patient's right to free speech. By suing patients over criticism, you will only bring more attention to it and highlight the negative reviews.
We now live in a world where doctors are rated like professionals in many other industries, a trend that will continue to grow. Many doctors dislike being rated at all, but to succeed in the online world you shouldn't ignore reviews. Instead, approach online ratings proactively. You'll find yourself better able to influence the online conversation about you, fix any shortcomings in your practice, and engage critical patients in a positive, constructive way.

Dr. Demock, a member of the Michigan Osteopathic Association, is a board-certified and experienced family physician with background in chronic disease management and preventative health.

HealthyTown Everywhere Teaches Michigan Kids To Make Healthy Choices
HealthyTown-Everywhere™ (HTE) is a physician-led health program promoting better nutrition, fitness and healthy behaviors. With a guided grocery store tour, HTE educates children on how to make healthy choices at an early age. The program is fun and designed to be interactive with the kids.
HealthyTown-Everywhere™ was founded by Paul R. Ehrmann, D.O., a preventative health and wellness advocate and medical director of the Family Health Care Center of Royal Oak for more than 35 years.
"Being at a family practice, I've always worked with families to help them make positive choices," said Ehrmann. "As physicians, it's our responsibility to support the communities we serve."
Dr. Ehrmann hopes to see this project spread throughout Michigan, particularly in underserved areas which often require the most support in battling obesity. The program as a whole is expanding to meet the needs of the communities statewide. Grocery store tours are available to adults as well, and there are future projects being planned to incorporate the national "Walk with a Doc" program into the guided tour.
