Birmingham Bar Volunteer Lawyers Program focuses on foreclosure!

A former steelworker, who is on disability because of an illness that caused him to go blind, was able to keep his house out of foreclosure thanks to the assistance of BBVLP volunteer attorneys.

Clinton Motley came to the BBVLP last year because his mortgage company would not accept his payments or talk to him about a modification. Motley had inherited the house from his mother but the mortgage company still had the paperwork in her name.

"I was trying to make the payments but when I became disabled my monthly disability check was only $733 and my mortgage was $650," Motley said. "I couldn't afford the mortgage and still have enough money to live."

The BBVLP and volunteer attorney, who did not want her name publicized, worked with Motley to correct the deed, obtain a modification and eventually refinance so Motley could remain in his house.  "I am thankful I was able to stay in my family's home and to continue to make payments that I could afford," Motley said.
