 “More Than Words” Part One

“More Than Words” isn’t just a song from the 90’s. It is an idea that Early Childhood Educators need to really think about every day in their classroom.  How you say something and what you say has more influence than you may realize:
  • “You have to say you’re sorry” – Often children are not really sorry because they do not have the social and emotional development yet to fully understand this concept. Forcing a child to say “I’m sorry” teaches the child that they just need to say the words for a “”Get out of jail free” card. Instead, let the child choose what they want to say or do. Prompt them with “What can you do or say that would help your friend feel better?” But also remember, experiencing conflict and seeing what happens before you jump is a way that children can develop their social coping skills.
  • “Get off my table”, “Don’t rip my books” – This type of language can undermine the feel of community in the classroom. Instead say, “Please take your feet off of our table”, or better yet, “Feet stay on the floor”.
  • “I don’t want to hear it” – You are taking away the child’s opinion. Instead, pause and take a moment to really hear what the child is saying or showing. Acknowledge what is being communicated.
These are just a few ideas…..more to come in the next edition.

Movement During Winter Months

If your school agers are stuck inside due to the weather, or just stuck waiting around, these short dance activities can really get them moving. What’s great about these YouTube videos is the popular music and authentic hip hop dance moves that appeal to older kids. The step by step instruction allows kids to be successful and  gets  kids moving. The videos are short (4-5 minutes) so you can do as few or as many as your available time allows. To get to the videos, follow this link:   https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLC2C841486EB885F1
