Holy Rosary School

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone enjoyed the Winter break last week. I had the privilege of joining 9 other HRS faculty members at the Los Angeles Religious Education Conference last week. We had a wonderful experience joining together in prayer with 40,000 other Catholics as well as attending workshops on such topics as bullying in our schools, use of technology in a Catholic school classroom, teaching the Gospel, and coming together as a Catholic community, to name a few. The teachers that attended will be sharing what they learned with the other faculty at a future meeting.

Two of our 8th graders, Alex and Madeleine, also attended the Congress and had a fantastic time. Here they are with one of the wonderful speakers, Fr. Tony.

On Monday, the students were blessed with a Muse Band performance during all lunches. The students in Muse Band, which practices after school on Mondays, played a number of songs and we were very proud of them. Congratulations Muse Band.

Under the Moonlight is coming! Our School/Parish Auction will be held April 1st. Tickets are $30 each. It will be a fun evening with classroom projects, teacher outings and a ton of baskets all available to bid on. Come and join in the fun.

Come out to Holy Rosary School Night at the A's Game on April 22nd. Tickets now on sale at the school. Buy your tickets to support the 8th grade class.

Blessings,

Mr. Hooke

One of our school families, the Rubios, is in need of prayer and support. We were shared the following gofundme page. If you would like to support them, please visit the following link.

One of our families in our second grade class has lost their home to a broken water main, which destroyed their home. They lost clothing and many other items that are needed for day-to-day basis. If you would like to contribute please see Mrs. Vanderklugt in second grade.

Forgiveness - Part II - How to Forgive Someone
Last week I wrote about the reasons why we forgive. We forgive:
  • because Jesus commanded us to;
  • because God created us to be forgiving and compassionate;
  • because we have been forgiven so much by God;
  • simply because it is good for us; it sets us free;
Forgiveness brings us healing and grace to move on with our lives, whereas choosing not to forgive brings the poison of hatred and bitterness into our hearts and souls and can even cause us physical harm. It might be worthwhile for us to think of someone this week that we have not yet forgiven and see if we can take another step in the direction of forgiving them.

I would like to lay out for you the stages of forgiveness. This information is from "The Little Black Book for Lent," from the Diocese of Saginaw, Michigan and from my own experience:

The Four Stages of Forgiving Someone:
First of all, it is important to recognize that it takes all of us time to forgive, especially if the offense was serious. It may take weeks, months or even years for us to get to the point of wanting to forgive, depending on the seriousness of the offense, our psychological health and our spiritual maturity. Second, it is also vital that we understand that forgiving someone does not mean that we must deny what the person did, or pretend it wasn't wrong or that it didn't hurt us. In other words, it is okay to be hurt, angry and frustrated - for awhile.
  1. 1.     If I do not want to forgive someone, I then need to ask God to help me to want to forgive; this is the very first and crucial step in moving away from bitterness toward forgiveness and healing.
  2. 2.     Instead of identifying the person totally with whatever he/she did to hurt me, I begin to see the person as someone like me - imperfect, but still someone God loves.
  3. 3.     I give up my "right" to get even. Vengeful thoughts don't make the other person suffer. They hurt me; again, they are simply poison. So, I try to "rinse" my mind of those kinds of thoughts and simply say a prayer for the person instead of getting worked up.
  4. 4.     In prayer I stand next to the Lord and together with him look at the other person. I put the person at the foot of the cross with Jesus and realize that Jesus died for him/her too. For sure Jesus wants good things to happen to the one who hurt me. So, with the Lord's help - and some struggle - I begin to look at the other person the way the Lord does and ask myself: "What does Jesus see in this person? What hopes and dreams does Jesus have for her/him?"
Quotes on forgiveness:
  • Remember that as Christians, we're supposed to be a temple not a courthouse.
  • Forgiveness is giving up any hope for a better past.
    • Forgiveness is the fragrance that the flower leaves on the heel of the one that crushed it (Immaculee Ilibagiza).
    • To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you (Lewis B. Smedes)

Save the Dates:
  • Parish Retreat - March 3, 4 and 5. This is a powerful experience of allowing the Holy Spirit to transform our lives. Hear moving testimonies of fellow parishioners, and experience great music, fellowship, prayer and fun. It can change your life!
  • Lenten Mission with Tom Booth - Well-known singer, songwriter and speaker, Tom Booth will be at Holy Rosary for Lent. Tom has written beautiful songs such as "I Will Choose Christ," "Can We Love?" "Here I Am," and "Sacred Silence." He will join us for our Masses the weekend of March 11-12 and then conduct a parish mission Monday-Wednesday, March 13-15. See Tom's website at www.tomboothmusic.com for more information about him.
