A Note from Dean Cavalieri

It may be hard to believe, but we are only about 70 days away from Commencement Week at Rowan University and preparations for the week-long celebration has already begun. Below, you can read about the success of the first group of graduates in this year's class who have secured residency positions throughout the country. As we acknowledge the success of this year's graduates, I also hope you take a moment to read about some of the many important contributions of Dr. William Ranieri and Dr. Theresa Scholl, both of whom have been recognized with the title of Professor Emeritus.

My best,

Thomas A. Cavalieri, DO, MACOI, FACP

Dean's Forum Provides Campus Update and Anticipated Growth

Stratford campus growth, in terms of both the physical plant and education and research opportunities, was the prevailing theme at this month's Dean's Forum. Exciting opportunities are in our future, including an expanded class size in August 2018 and a possible SOM building and presence on the Glassboro campus. Dean Cavalieri also provided preliminary plans for a potential campus expansion, which could include additional parking opportunities, a direct road connecting the campus to Route 30 and a new Rowan Medicine building location. This is great news for SOM, and none of it is possible without the support of our dedicated faculty, staff, students, alumni and community.

Osteopathic Match Day Yields Positive Results

Members of the Class of 2017 gathered on Monday, February 6, to celebrate their Osteopathic Graduate Medical Education (OGME) program match results. Forty-five percent of the 65 students who participated in the OGME match will train in the primary care program of their choice, including Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Ob/Gyn and Pediatrics. Students who opted not to participate in the OGME program match will learn their fate when the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) for allopathic graduate medical education (GME) programs match on Friday, March 17. To celebrate, a match luncheon for all members of the Class of 2017 will be held that day at the Mansion on Main Street in Voorhees, NJ.

SOM Observes Black History Month

SOM's chapter of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) commemorated Black History Month throughout February.

The month-long celebration included posters that highlighted prominent Civil Rights leaders and a showcase of the rich diversity of the African diaspora displayed in the Academic Center Atrium and Top Docs Café. Each Wednesday afternoon of the month, students, faculty and staff could enjoy food samples and music inspired by African culture courtesy of SNMA students.

The annual Black History Month dinner was held on February 23. "Vision to Move Forward" was this year's theme, and Dr. Adeleke Adesina ('12) gave the keynote address. The evening included a variety of soul and ethnic foods, and performances of spoken word, African dance and music. Students also held a three-day silent auction, with proceeds benefiting a scholarship for students at Woodrow Wilson High School in Camden.

Dr. Ranieri and Dr. Scholl Receive Rank of Professor Emeritus

Dr. William Ranieri and Dr. Theresa Scholl have both been promoted to the academic rank of Professor Emeritus at SOM.

Dr. Ranieri was the founding chair of the school's Department of Psychiatry. During the 20 years that he held this position, the department experienced dramatic growth, becoming one of the largest such departments in the osteopathic profession. Under Dr. Ranieri's guidance, the Department of Psychiatry also developed several subspecialty fellowship programs that became a springboard for osteopathic graduate medical education programs. Of significance, Dr. Ranieri led the effort to create a developmentally disabled program that went on to earn statewide recognition.

Dr. Ranieri's deep commitment to the school was evidenced during his years as the Assistant, and then, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs. In this capacity he provided strong leadership to the faculty practice plan and served as an important mentor for several department chairpersons. On the national front, Dr. Ranieri was the Executive Director for the American Osteopathic Board of Neurology, the President of the American College of Neuropsychiatrists, and was the Vice Chairperson of the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners.

An internationally known researcher, Dr. Theresa Scholl, of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, devoted much of her 35-year career at SOM to research involving maternal nutrition, metabolism and health.

Dr. Scholl initiated and directed the Camden Study, a major study that received continuous NIH funding for more than 30 years. The Study, which researched the health status of minority women and their offspring, led to the discovery that maternal growth during adolescent pregnancy impairs nutrient transfer from the mother, increasing the risk of fetal growth restriction and maternal obesity. Dr. Scholl was at the forefront of other research that supported the current CDC recommendation on iron supplementation for women and led research into the role of vitamin D status and poor pregnancy outcomes among low income and minority women.

It is an auditioned, volunteer organization composed of singers ranging from high school students to retired professionals.

Dr. Joanne Kaiser-Smith Featured in New Book

Dr. Joanne Kaiser-Smith, the Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education, has been featured in the recently published  A History of Osteopathic Internal Medicine - Celebrating the ACOI's First 75 Years .

The book chronicles the shaping of the profession, from its origins early in the last century, to its growth and its future opportunities and challenges. From historical research and interviews with dozens of osteopathic professionals, the book addresses key questions concerning the development of the profession, bringing to the forefront the lives of early internists as well as those who over the past eight decades have helped form the modern concept of osteopathic internal medicine.

The profile of Dr. Kaiser-Smith, a 1984 graduate of SOM, is included in the book's section on "The Rise of Women in Osteopathic Internal Medicine." In it, she discusses her career, including the important mentors that helped shape her success, and the most memorable moment, to date, of her career - her nomination for the AOA's Mentor of the Year Award.

'The Vagina Monologues' Highlight Women's Health Issues

The Stratford campus community gathered for an evening of heartfelt performances by students, faculty and staff in SOM's annual production of 'The Vagina Monologues' on February 8.

'The Vagina Monologues' is an episodic play written by Eve Ensler that includes a varying number of monologues that detail aspects of the feminine experience, including self-discovery, birth, love and rape. Female empowerment is a recurring theme throughout the play.

Proceeds from the SOM performance benefited the Camden Center for Family Services.
