Sojourner Truth (1797-1883)
In honor of Black History Month, all month long we will be sharing the legacies and stories of the heroes, sheroes, and events in the fight for Black suffrage on social media under the hashtag #VRABlackHistory. Follow us on Twitter (@VRAmatters) to share your own facts.

Today we honor Sojourner Truth, who was not only “one of the first African American women to win a lawsuit in the United States”, but was also a powerful advocate of the suffrage movement for Black and all women.

Click on the video to WATCH as Actress Kerry Washington reads the 1851 speech of abolitionist Sojourner Truth. This is a POWERFUL performance.
