Maryland is in the midst of a behavioral health crisis - and I am on the front lines. At Arundel Lodge, we provide treatment to people struggling with addiction and mental health, and we've got our hands full. From 2010 to 2015, overdose deaths spiked an astonishing 216 percent. In fact, Maryland averages four opioid-related deaths every day, making this the state's fourth leading cause of death - behind only heart disease, stroke and cancer.
Maryland's suicide rate has also risen dramatically. Shockingly, suicide is one of the top three causes of death among Maryland residents age 10 to 34. While other leading causes of death largely strike people over the age of 70, opioid overdoses and mental health crises are killing younger Marylanders, creating a generation of orphans and tearing families apart.

Art Show at Quiet Waters
The opening reception for Transcendent Musings: A collection of art by Colin Lacey and Christian McCarroll, held in the Garden Gallery at Quiet Waters, was a wonderful success! Approximately 60 people attended and artists sold six pieces. "The artists' works were well received with lively discussions regarding themes, feelings, and the intricacies within the artwork," says Lindsey Aumick, Arundel Lodge's Open Eye Gallery Director.

Colin Lacey
has lived much of his adult life in Maryland. He attended
The
School
of the Museum of Fine
Arts
, part of
Tufts
'
School
of
Arts
and Sciences, in
Boston. Colin is a prolific artist who works in an expressionistic, abstract style. His paintings
are filled with colorful figures and animals that tell a story. Colin
has had many successful art shows in Annapolis and he is an inspiration to fellow artists. Colin says,"art is an expression that is engraved, self captivating and a new experience every time."
Christian McCarroll was born in Los Angeles, CA and attended art school at the California Institute of Fine Arts in Valencia, CA. His artworks are expressionistic and emotional, featuring faces, figures, and nature. His paintings often depict the tragic and honest aspects of existence; the incredible expression of the inner workings of a human being. Making art, he says, gives him a feeling of purpose. His other passions include learning about history and culture. He believes "life would be a mistake without art and music."

Hot Chocolate Bar
There are few things more enjoyable that a hot chocolate on a cold winter's day. Thanks to Jack Twohig's donation to the morale committee, the Arundel Lodge staff was treated to a beautiful table with a fabulous spread of hot chocolate and all the trimmings - whip cream, caramel, marshmallows - as well as sweet nibblers like pretzels with candy kisses.

Egochi Achinonu
Egochi Achinonu says she always knew she wanted to work in the mental health field but was unsure of the path she would take to get there. Egochi received her bachelor's degree in psychology from Trinity Washington University and Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Johns Hopkins University School of Education. She had intentions of entering a PhD program immediately for clinical psychology but had a change of heart.
"I really desired to have a one on one connection with my clients and saw counseling as a better career field for me," Egochi explained.
Before coming to Arundel Lodge, Egochi interned at Maryland Correctional Institute in Jessup. Egochi enjoys working with a diverse group of people; varying in race, age, and personal challenges. She provides intakes in the morning and therapy sessions in the afternoon. Egochi says, "I'm grateful for the opportunity to be a part of an organization that provides so much support for the community. Since working here I've gotten married and I'm expecting my first child so Arundel Lodge is a place where I have reached major milestones in my life."
Staff Appreciation: The Maintenance Team
The Maintenance team, Peter Palmquist, Ahmed Kpaka, Cecil Johnson, and Reyna del Carmen Perez Cordero, were recognized for their service and hard work. - Computer Lab Volunteer - help the individuals we serve learn basic computer skills, such as setting up an email account, how to use Microsoft Word, or resume building. Volunteers are needed for afternoon hours, from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm, Monday - Thursday.
- Arundel Lodge Pillars - join a group of people that care about mental health and care about the Lodge as they identify needs and perform service projects and advocate to the community at large on our behalf.
