This week's survey
(These survey questions are sent in by our readers. Please spend a minute to give your answer to this week's survey as one or possibly more of your industry peers thinks this question is important and wishes to see your point of view as well as others in the industry.)

Last week's survey results...

  • Its not unusual. We usually build in a commission for our designers. Invariably it is 10% but has been as high as 20% for some of the bigger design teams we have done work for. They like to show their clients our invoice to show they are making nothing on top, but they are actually getting a 'secret' commission anyway. Truth is, we add it on, so we can take it off anyway. 5% is the lowest I've heard and would be rare in that sense.
  • Yes - how much would you be paying a sales rep to bring in the business. Tell them to send the work my way & I'll pay them 10%!
  • I recon this is only fair if you get all his work
  • Well if they are sending you the work I don't see the problem. It would be simple enough to add that cost in.
  • OK, I'm probably a dinosaur, but I hate kickbacks. If the designer is only charging for his own work and sending the customers to me I can understand him wanting a slice of the action. Therefore I would suggest that he invoices the entire job to the customer and takes a profit on the printing as well as the design.
We had a lady who sent us 3 small print jobs for a real estate firm that she worked for, then demanded free artwork and brochure printing for another company she owned. I declined and have not heard from her or the real estate firm again.

  • Yes it is right, if you are the manufacturer, and they send you all of their work, you should be offering them more than 5%, as you have a rep on the road (so to speak) without any overhead to you. They most likely supply print ready artwork, so all you have to do is print/manufacture and install, without any running around...a client like this is worth holding on to + looking after.
  • I look from this from a different point of view - I am a supplier of materials. I have seen 2 different things enter the industry in the last 10 years. First is the designers get something made up by local manufacturers and the end user has it made up in Asia, by passing the designer and local manufacture....who is promoting this - the print broker people whom have enforced themselves into the market putting large margins on while screwing the designer and the local manufacturers. It is a hard market out there at the moment and profit needs to be shared more down the line. I feel the designer should be making 5% more, the manufacturer (printer) should be making 5% more and the supplier should be making 5% more.
  • its appears to be quite common in the designer and brokerage side of the industry.
I believe it is wrong. it is the thin edge of the wedge, this year its 5% next year or in future years???
the only discount we offer is early settlement. Our price is our price and I strongly believe that should be the standard, or where is the industry headed......?

Smile: It's only Monday!

A guy goes into the Job Centre Office to apply for a job.

The interviewer asks him, "Are you allergic to anything?"
He replies, "Yes, caffeine. I can't drink coffee."

"Ok,  Have you ever been in the military service?"
"Yes,"  he says, "I was in  Afghanistan for one tour."

The  interviewer says, "That will give you five extra points toward employment."

Then he asks, "Are you disabled in any way?"
The  guy says, "Yes. A bomb exploded near me and I lost both my testicles."

The  interviewer grimaces and then says, "Disabled in your country's service.  Well, that qualifies for extra bonus points. Okay."

"Looking at the regulations you have got enough points for me to hire you right now.  Our normal hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. You can start tomorrow at 10:00 am, and plan on starting at 10:00 am every day."

The  guy is puzzled and asks, "If the work hours are from 8:00 am to 4:00 PM, why don't you want me here until 10:00 am?"

"This is a government job," the interviewer says. "For the first two hours, we just stand around drinking coffee and scratching our balls.  No point in you coming in for that."
