Last week's survey results...

- Great (& timely)question. Perhaps it could also be posed in the following way. Within this rapidly changing graphics industry have you recently undertaken a serious strategic review of your business model. There is actually a significant difference (within the business model) between a sign manufacturing business that sells signs and a sales organisation that makes signs. As a full service sign mfg your model will liklely be based around the efficiencies and type of work required in covering the weekly, monthly cost of production. For example if you have spent $150K on a wide format printer then not likely you will focus on neon signs. The flip side is that if your model is sales focused then it is likely that your focus will be more towards exploiting every available opportunity within your client base. There is no right or wrong answer however given the rapidly changing market a strategic review would include a basic SWOT including factors such as location, market depth and demand, whether it is possible to make a real profit by outsourcing some production, whether in fact the time has come for you to consider selling while your business still has (or can have)real worth. Used to be said that the only sure things were death and taxes however to pay tax you have to make a profit so perhaps it is time to change that saying to the only sure things are death and changes in the market place. Wishing everyone a happy, healthy and above all safe festive season and a great 2017.
(Michael - A S Fisher Co)
- Yes, technology has meant the lines between the two industries have blurred. Small print is now a significant part of our signage business. We enjoy it, we're good at it and it allows us to offer a complete service to our clients. I believe several of our competitors in our area do the same thing.
(Anne - Jigsaw Signs & Print)
- Yes, years ago we started to offer this service and we have built up quite an armoury of equipment.
- We have expanded into this for the past 5 years and whilst it not a big market it gives us the opportunity to offer this service to the customer for all his signages and printing needs - like a one stop shop
- I have offered this service for years providing the design and using a supplier to provide the finished printed products as sign is primarily what we make in-house. Offering this service works well as are in a remote area and we can provide customers a larger range of service if they require it.
- It's quite easy to offer a brokerage service to your clients. A way of expanding into the offset business without spending a penny. It helps our clients in that they can still deal with only one supplier for all their print and signage requirements
(As a publishing practice to protect ourselves from any potential liability, company and individual names that are referred to negatively in any of these comments are removed.
In addition we reserve the right to remove comments that are blatant advertising for one product or company)

Printer Maintenance over the holiday period
Roland DG in their Christmas message to the industry included some valuable advice on how best to leave your Roland DG printer if it is to stand unattended for any length of time. This advice may well be useful to non Roland DG machine users as well.
