Faculty Recognition Ceremony
 Thank you to everyone who joined us for the 4th annual Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine Faculty Recognition Ceremony on February 7! It was a special evening honoring all the incredible faculty members in the College of Medicine and across our communities who enrich the lives of our medical students and enhance our medical education program.
The Dean of the College of Medicine,
Dr. Phillip Boiselle, thanked faculty members for their role in the success of the College. He stated, "Whether it is your full-time job, or in addition to your role as a busy practitioner in the community, we are grateful that you have chosen to make the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine your academic home. We hope you will continue to work side by side with us as we innovate, expand, and bring value to our community and state."
The ceremony was particularly meaningful as we welcomed the family of the founding Dean of the College of Medicine,
Dr. Michael Friedland, and unveiled the inaugural Michael L. Friedland, M.D. Educational Leadership Award, which honors his legacy and the attributes he epitomized: integrity, vision, leadership, and dedication to teaching. The award was presented to
Dr. Sarah Wood.
Congratulations to the 22 teaching award recipients acknowledged for their talent and dedication to our educational program!

Office for Diversity and Inclusion Hosts Forensics Day
The Office for Diversity and Inclusion hosted its first Forensics Day on Feb. 3. Forensics Day was coordinated by Rachel Tobillo, M2, and HCOP Student Leader. Dr. Darin Trelka and special guest Detective Dennis Plaska of the Broward County Sheriff's Office led 20 Medical Academy Students from Boynton Beach High School through an overview of the science of forensics and then through small group rotations through interactive centers. The four centers were fingerprinting, blood spatter, DNA science, and mock crime scene with a mannequin. A discussion of the students' findings, deductions, and questions concluded this engaging and educational day. The Office for Diversity and Inclusion is grateful to the Education Foundation of Palm Beach County for its support of this program.

College Hosts Research Day
The College hosted its annual Medical Student and Resident Research Day on Friday, Feb. 24 in the Gelb Auditorium and College Lobby.
M1-M4 students and Residents participated in the event, presenting 89 abstracts of research, clinical vignettes and quality improvement projects in a poster symposium. Seven individuals were selected to deliver oral presentations. Students were given 10 minutes to present their work to two faculty judges, who were then responsible for selecting 3 winners from the clinical vignette poster category and 3 winners from the research poster category. The oral presentations lasted 10 minutes each, and the judges chose one winner from each of the two categories. Click here for the list of winners, and photos from the event.
Dean Phillip Boiselle, the keynote speaker for this year's Research Day, spoke about lung cancer research and encouraged the students and residents to take advantage of the outstanding opportunities for engaging in mentored research and other forms of scholarship at the College of Medicine.
Dr. Jennifer Caceres modeled the event after the American College of Physicians Conference. The annual event has grown rapidly and encouraged students to build the skills they need to share their research at larger events in the future. Not only are more students submitting abstracts in hopes of participating in the Medical Student and Research and Scholarship Day at FAU each year, but more have gone on to submit their work to national conferences as well.

New Device Could Rapidly Detect
Zika Virus at Airports
About the size of a tablet, a portable device that could be used in a host of environments like a busy airport or even a remote location in South America, may hold the key to detecting the dreaded Zika virus accurately, rapidly and inexpensively using just a saliva sample. While scientists across the world are scrambling to find some sort of immunization, researchers from Florida Atlantic University, including Massimo Caputi, Ph.D. from the College of Medicine, are working to develop a diagnostic tool to reduce the impact of the outbreak until a vaccine is identified. Studies Presented at National Emergency Medical Service Conference
Dr. Scott Alter presented three posters at the National Association of EMS Physicians Annual Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana at the end of January. The studies are titled "Success rate of prehospital LMA placement after failed intubation attempts," "Intubation of prehospital patients with curved laryngoscope blade is more successful than with straight blade," and "Dispatch chief complaint may identify prehospital patients most in need of EMS." Honors & Awards
Joanna Drowos Wins Item Writer of the Year
 The National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME), has awarded
Joanna L. Drowos, DO, MPH, MBA, Item Writer the Year Award for her contributions to the Health Promotion/Disease Prevention and Health Care Delivery (HPDP/HCD) dimensions of the NBOME Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX-USA). "
I'm flattered to be selected for this prestigious award. I enjoy the opportunity to write exam questions for the NBOME because the practice has improved my own skills as an educator, and it allows me to give back to my profession," Dr. Drowos said.
Student Selected for LGBTI Health Internship at Vanderbilt
David Honorio, the first undergraduate student to become part of the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine LGBT Health Curriculum Committee, was selected for an LGBTI Health Internship at Vanderbilt University's School of Medicine. The Vanderbilt program for LGBTI Health strives to promote national leadership in providing excellent patient care, education, research, and advocacy for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex communities.
Mr. Honorio's work on the LGBT Health Curriculum Committee included researching assessments to evaluate the present curriculum, recruiting panelists and moderating College's first LGBT peer panel, and recruiting physicians to support our LGBT curriculum. He is currently working to establish an LGBT interest group for graduate and College students.
Mandi Sehgal, M.D. Named Teaching and Learning Lead
Mandi Sehgal, M.D. was recently named the Teaching and Learning Lead for the Med U/Web-GEMs Editorial Board. She has also been appointed Director of the Geriatrics Thread in the UME curriculum. Med U is a recognized national nonprofit dedicated to delivering the best health care education through collaborative development and research into innovative, high impact virtual teaching and learning methods, to help students acquire much needed critical reasoning, diagnostic, and communication skills. Web-GEMs are a series of peer-reviewed interactive case modules based on the AGS/AAMC Geriatrics Competencies. The web-GEMs cases develop learners' understanding of geriatric medicine and integrate that understanding as they expand their skills in other specialties. Created under the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation geriatrics education initiative, web-GEMs was a collaborative effort developed by authors from 27 different institutions.
Currently, all of the students at FAU College use the Med U/Web-GEMs platform during their clinical clerkships

Joanna Drowos, DO, MPH, MBA, recently published a study in Academic Medicine titled "Faculty Development for Medical School Community-Based Faculty: A Council of Academic Family Medicine Educational Research Alliance Study Exploring Institutional Requirements and Challenges." Trelka Named Finalist for FAU's Teacher of the Year Award
Dr. Darin Trelka, M.D., Ph.D.
, Assistant Professor of
Integrated Medical Science, has been nominated for the Distinguished Teacher of the Year award. The winner receives a cash prize and delivers the keynote address at the University's Honors Convocation on the evening of April 19.
Levitt Named President-Elect
of Florida Society of Pathologists
Morton H. Levitt, M.D., M.H.A, has been elected President-Elect of the Florida Society of Pathologists at their winter meeting Feb. 17-19. His term as president begins February 2019. The Florida Society of Pathologists is the voice for all pathologists working in the frequently intense field of pathological medicine. Dr. Levitt is also the current chair of the society's Political Committee.
College of Medicine Alumnus Becomes Chief Resident
Adam Schertz, M.D., was selected as a chief resident for the 2018-2019 Internal Medicine Residency Class at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and happily accepted the position. "The education and training that I received at FAU started me on a great path to success. I am truly grateful for the opportunity that FAU provided, and I hope to continue to make the medical school proud as I progress through my career," Dr. Shertz said.
