Lovejoy High School

A Message from the Principal

Lovejoy HS News 02 27 17

Parents and Guardians,

Last week, our counselors worked with 9th-11th graders to begin making selections for next year's classes. Students did a great job of asking questions and being thoughtful about the courses they were considering. As the LHS Principal, I am incredibly proud of the many different opportunities that we provide for our students.

As we quickly approach the end of the grading period on March 10th, please let your student's teachers know of any questions or concerns you may have. Each Tuesday, teachers should have their grade books current for any grades taken through the previous Friday to help communicate how students are doing academically. Please reach out to your student's teacher or to me if PowerSchool is not being updated.

Below you will find information about upcoming events and student success. Please take a few minutes to read through them.

Sincerely ,

Chris Mayfield
Principal
Lovejoy High School

Topic: Thoughts on the Gifted - Talent Development and Real World Achievement
Wednesday, March 1st
7:00 pm
LHS Lecture Hall

Tanya Donaghey will present an overview of recent scholarship on the subject that some very gifted students flounder during and after college without forging a meaningful application for their talent. As parents, we can provide opportunities for talent development, but the individual with talent must be guided to accept responsibility for their own development. Mrs. Donaghey will also share some tips and scenarios from families that she has encountered in her professional capacity.

Tanya Donaghey has 30 years experience in education as a teacher and private tutoring business administrator and consultant. She has a B.S. of Education from Baylor University, a Master's from SMU, and a Principal certification from UNT (2015).

You may help by donating new or used glasses.  There will be marked boxes available at each campus. To learn more please click here .

Student Recognition

LHS JWAC
Our Junior World Affairs Council had 8 students travel to UT Arlington to compete in the Dallas World Affairs Council's Academic WorldQuest Competition.  In our second year of attendance, we expanded to two teams and improved our ranking.  Team 1 (Noah Corbitt, Zach Brown, Meredith Ehlmann, Jerad King) finished 17th of 77 teams, and Team 2 (Ben Armistead, Ben Carder, Taite Borozny, Austin Spruell) finished 37th of 77 teams.  These students collaboratively worked through 100 multiple-choice questions over the following topics: current events, peace and conflict in today's world, combating infectious disease, European Union, countering violent extremism, Turkey, global megacities, China, and women in technology.  All eight student represented themselves and LHS very well, even during the mile walk back to the bus.  Lastly, we have to profess thanks to LHS graduates Ian Raybon and Kerry Joiner for their warm welcome upon our arrival to the UTA campus.

LHS Wrestling - State Meet
We had two men and two women wrestle in this year's state tournament. Dylan South was our lone senior of the four Lovejoy wrestlers to compete at the state tournament, along with sophomores Lilly Musselman and Morgan Elvin, and freshman Hunter Duncan.

Lilly and Morgan both wrestled well in their second consecutive trip to the state tournament. They both lost to eventual state placers in their matches and were unable to come away with a victory. Both will be back for their junior campaign, and we are very excited about their potential next year!
Hunter Duncan became the first freshmen in Lovejoy history to wrestle in the men's state tournament. He finished with a 1-2 record, recording a clutch come from behind win in his second match.

Senior Dylan South also finished the tournament with a 1-2 record, notching an exciting :22 pin in his second match for his lone victory. Dylan finishes his Lovejoy wrestling career as a two-time state qualifier, only the second male to wrestle in two state tournaments to date.
