This week's survey
(These survey questions are sent in by our readers. Please spend a minute to give your answer to this week's survey as one or possibly more of your industry peers thinks this question is important and wishes to see your point of view as well as others in the industry.)

Last week's survey results...

Do you have examples of designers not knowing enough about print ready artwork?
  • Heaps of times, not understanding bleed is probably the most frequent, followed by colour space, transparencies & proper font embedding. It seems more frequent as access to on-line artwork editors means anyone can try to do the artwork themselves.Buying a Ferrari doesn't automatically mean you are a qualified race-car driver, just as much as having a trial Adobe CS makes you able to automatically a Graphic Designer. You need to make clients aware of the expectations up front & make sure they are not afraid to ask if help needed.
  • Yes, Hundreds
  • When cut vinyl was in it's prime - designers would send us art with millions of nodes, so the vinyl would look like it was cut during an earthquake! Now in a time when everybody is an 'expert on computers' we get 'print ready' DOC and XML files :-) or AI files having each item on it's own layer, some layers invisible/won't print and tiny design relics all through it (lot's of fun when you are printing 50m of the unexpected).
  • I am constantly given so called artwork of poor design, & quality, from customers that have no idea. There are some very good designers out there, but it seems anyone can put up a sign saying they are a "graphic designer". I am often disheartened by the standards of our industry. (Lance, Grafton SignArt)
  • Yep, sure do. The most common problem is in regard to bleed & trim, colour matching is another high on the list. Most (so called) designers have no idea of basic Sign design, they may be good at designing business cards & flyers etc. Good Sign design comes from experience & from understanding what a sign is to do, a lot has to do with being taught through a Qualified Trade. (Bernie, Geraldton GraFX)
  • YES!!! All the time - very frustrating when clients have paid for what they think is good artwork only to have to tell them that what they have paid for might look pretty but can not be used.
  • So very many... The main ones being;
    * CMYK and RGB in the same file.
    * Two sets of crop marks or no bleed at all, when we need bleed and no crop marks.
    * Poor quality images - not enough dpi.
    * Half an image/logo when I need more for bleed.
    * A lack of colour information for accurate reproduction.
  • I have repeatedly told the same (university trained) graphic designer to put 2mm bleed on her artwork and to embed the colour profiles yet every file she sends has neither. I'm so sick of asking her that now I charge her extra to cover my time.
  • Plenty, most common ones are publisher files in RGB wit no bleed and the other one is a photoshop file, flattened, rasterisezed and sent through as a low res jpeg about 60mm wide wanting it to be a 2 metre banner. (Reid, Juiceprint)
  • I constantly get vehicle wrap artwork in the physical shape of the vehicle - wheels and windows cut out etc. Another problem we get is images downloaded from web pages supplied for vehicle wraps from designers themselves. They often can't get their head around such a large canvas as A0 is usually their biggest size they do. I advised one designer that I needed to be able to cut the excess out so she should leave it in, and her supervisor rang me and abused me for not informing them of that request before they started. My fault entirely apparently.
