Heroes Hall Museum Opens at OC Fair & Event Center

| Heroes Hall at the OC Fair & Event Center, a permanent, year-round museum with exhibitions, performances and educational programs that celebrate the legacy of Orange County veterans and others who have served our nation, opened to the public on February 15. The two-story exhibition space will rotate themes semi-annually with each focusing on an aspect of the personal stories and experiences of veterans. Admission is free. The inaugural exhibitions are "The Things They Carried," an exhibition based on the book by Tim O'Brien, and "The SAAAB Story," documenting the Santa Ana Army Air base. |

"Calliotree" Public Art Project Honors Historic Santa Ana Tree
|
The City of Santa Ana was founded in 1869 with a man in a tree. Founder William H. Spurgeon, climbed a Sycamore tree to survey the land, and fell in love with it. A sycamore tree marking the city's birthplace still stands, but in a sorrowful state. It lives in a parking lot, knitted into chain link fence, and is slowly dying from root crowding and an irreversible fungal infestation. The tree is now the centerpiece of an interactive public art project in the process of being created with the involvement of the community. More details here.

US Poet Laureate Featured in 8th Annual Creative Edge Lecture

Herrera is the 21st Poet Laureate of the United States and is the first Latino to hold the position. He was appointed by the Library of Congress in 2015 for the one-year term, then was re-appointed in April 2016 for an additional one-year term. From 2012-2014, Herrera served as California State Poet Laureate. Herrera's many collections of poetry include Notes on the Assemblage; Senegal Taxi; Half of the World in Light: New and Selected Poems, a recipient of the PEN/Beyond Margins Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award; and 187 Reasons Mexicanos Can't Cross The Border: Undocuments 1971-2007. He is also the author of Crashboomlove: A Novel in Verse, which received the Americas Award. His books of prose for children include: SkateFate, Calling The Doves, which won the Ezra Jack Keats Award; Upside Down Boy, which was adapted into a musical for young audiences in New York City; and Cinnamon Girl: Letters Found Inside a Cereal Box. Herrera is also a performance artist and activist on behalf of migrant and indigenous communities and at-risk youth.
This is the 8th annual Creative Edge Lecture, presented by Arts Orange County in collaboration with Orange County Department of Education, 4th District PTA and Segerstrom Center for the Arts. The Boeing Company is the title sponsor for the eighth year in a row. |
California taxpayers can directly contribute to the Keep Arts in Schools Fund through their California 2016 Individual Tax Returns (due by April 15, 2017) in the "Contributions" section.
The "Keep Arts in Schools Fund" can be found in Voluntary Contribution Section 110 (425) of the "540" individual state tax-return form, and the minimum donation is just $1. Details here.
