March is Packed With Special Programs

The Lake Wales Public Library has many family- friendly activities in March.

Florida author Patrick Smith's son, Rick, will present a unique multimedia show honoring his father.  Highlighted in the show will be Smith's popular saga of Florida pioneers,  A Land Remembered.

Sponsored by the Lake Wales Library Association - Friends of the Library and the Jahna Foundation,  Patrick Smith's Florida begins at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, March 9, in the Polk State College - Lake Wales Arts Center's Updike Hall, 1099 State Road 60 East, Lake Wales and is free & open to all.

In 1945 children's author, Lois Lenski, wrote the fictional account of a Polk County childhood in her Newbery award-winning book, Strawberry Girl.  The book tells the story of ten-year-old, Birdie Boyer's move to western Polk County with her family in the early 20th Century.

The Lake Wales Library Association - Friends of the Library will host  An Afternoon with Lois Lenski & Strawberry Girl, 2:30 p.m., Sunday, March 19.  Anna Cotton will portray Lenski and Nicole Curtis will perform as Birdie Boyer.  Their program will include conversations between Miss Lenski and Strawberry Girl.

The Lake Wales Public Library's Youth Services Department will host a Family Book Discussion of  Strawberry Girl, 5:30 p.m., March 14.  Free copies of Strawberry Girl are given to young readers and their families.  The books are available in the Lake Wales Public Library's Children's Library, one free copy per family.

Lake Wales Museum & Cultural Center News

The Lake Wales Museum & Cultural Center is excited to announce the dedication of our crate label banners on Tuesday, February 28th at 3 pm at the Lake Wales Museum & Cultural Center.

A partnership between the Florida Citrus Hall of Fame, Visit Central Florida and the Polk County History Center's History and Heritage Trail inspired the creation of the Citrus Label Tour of Polk County.

We are happy to become another spot on this historic tour. Join us as we dedicate our labels which highlight the crate label designs of the Lake Wales Citrus Growers Association.

Lake Wales now has two locations participating in the Citrus Label Tour of Polk County, the Lake Wales Museum & Cultural Center and the Lake Wales Public Library. Both locations focus on the historical labels of local growers and packers.

The LW Museum Association's fundraiser, Beers with Pioneers Craft Brew & Food Tasting is 5 until 8 p.m., Saturday, March 18.  Don't miss this event.

The dedication ceremony is a 2017 Lake Wales Centennial Program, celebrating 100 years of Lake Wales' heritage.

WEDU PB S recently announced that the Lake Wales Public Library will be the recipient of one of the first four multi-media library corners the public broadcasting station will donate to area public libraries.

New Port Richey Public Library, Safety Harbor Public Library, Lake Wales Public Library, and North Port Public Library were each notified they would be the first recipients of a WEDU PBS Phyllis L. Ensign Library Corner.

In November 2015, WEDU received a very generous bequest from a long-time viewer. The $4 million gift was the largest gift to WEDU in its 58-year history. Those funds are supporting projects that will honor Mrs. Ensign's gift such as her love of reading to children at the local library. WEDU PBS Phyllis L. Ensign Library Corners will be inspiring and educating thousands of children throughout West Central Florida.

The library corners will include a bookshelf with a robust collection of PBS Kids books, DVDs, and CDs for the library's lending collection. The library corners will also include a reading rug, 2 electronic tablets loaded with PBS apps, a collection of 6 turnkey activity sessions with educational materials, take-home materials including a family resource guide, activity sheets, bookmarks, pencils, and more.

WEDU, in partnership with the Lake Wales Public Library, will a host community ribbon cutting celebration at 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 28 complete with a PBS Kids character appearance, activities, book giveaways. The Lake Wales Public Library's community ribbon cutting celebration will be held in the Library's Children's Department as part of our Wiggles & Giggles weekly toddler story time.  The public is invited to participate in the celebration.
