Got The Monday Blues?

Beat it With a Happy Wine!

I don't know about you, but I chose my wines not only based on what I want to eat, but also on the way I feel. Mondays can be rough. The high of the weekend is wearing off (hey, I have even enjoyed, courtesy of the generosity of a dear and old friend in the biz, 1989 G. Mascarello Barolo Monprivato and 1996 Lafarge Volnay Clos des Ducs. Both wines were absolutely spectacular. That's what Sundays are for :) and another week starts, with work, tight schedules, lunches on the run, and a good dose of cortisol released in response to the stresses of life.

So, when my mood is less than stellar and a little doom and gloom sets in, I do look for wines that cheer me up (along with something tasty to go with it). I am sure we all have our preferences, based on taste, budgets, or your significant half's own requirements, but what I reach for is a slightly chilled bottle of GREAT Cru Beaujolais, to go with a piece of crusty bread and some homemade black olive tapenade or chicken liver paté. If that fails to to put a smile on my face, well, there may be other options, but let's not go there today ;)

If I am stressed out and a bit grumpy, the last thing I would want is a giant Cabernet or a Chateneauf du Pape with a rib eye steak (especially at 7:00-8:00pm). That is a sure way to piss me off even more and assure a night of indigestion and misery (don't forget that a piece of meat takes about SIX hours to fully digest). BUT, a crisp, crunchy, zesty, full of sunshine Beaujolais is happiness in a bottle. A glass leads to another, good conversations start, you unwind and unload the daily stress by feeding your body with light and subtle energy. A few pieces of that bread and the aforementioned accoutrements, a few laughs, and a good night sleep is assured.

And of course you can repeat this RX on a Tuesday, if it doesn't get any better :)

My choice for today is the knockout, superb, the Louis CK of wines, Domaine du Pavillon de Chavannes 2015 Cotes du Brouilly.

So far, even the most hardcore wine-o has been unable to resist the utter-deliciousness of this baby. So, if you don't like it, you may either need a palate transplant, or try it on a different day :)

Just in case you have never made chicken liver paté, here is my go-to recipe, by Jacques Pepin, of course. I do use Tesseron Cognac Lot 29, for extra cheer, but you can of course use what you have handy :)

" Very light red. Complex, incisive scents of fresh red berries, blood orange, allspice and candied rose, lifted by a smoky mineral nuance. Juicy raspberry, cherry and spicecake flavors are accented by a hint of white pepper; bitter orange pith and rhubarb qualities lend refreshing bitterness. Gains depth on the very long, penetrating finish, which features sneaky, fine-grained tannins. " 93 points Josh Raynolds (Vinous Media)
