41ST ANNUAL AWARDS BANQUET
The 41st Annual Chamber Awards Banquet is set for Tuesday, February 28, 6:30 p.m. at the Dayton Community Center.

One of the highlights of the evening is the announcement of the 2016 Citizen of the Year winners for both Dayton and Liberty. In addition, newly-elected Chamber directors will be introduced and outgoing directors will be recognized for their service to the Chamber.

Returning this year as our guest entertainer is humorist and television host Chad Prather. Chad was a hit with the crowd at last year's banquet, and is making a return appearance with his humorous look at everyday life. In addition to numerous television and radio appearances, Chad hosts Ride TV's "It's My Backyard" and connects with fans through his many videos on social media.

Ken Owens will provide catering services for the evening.

Sponsorships are still available for the banquet. If you or your business would like to be represented as a sponsor, please contact the Chamber at 936.336.5736.

Tickets are $35 in advance (no tickets will be sold at the door) available at either Chamber office (1801 Trinity Street in Liberty across from Liberty City Hall) or 109 S. Main in Dayton (across from the post office). A table of 10 can be reserved for $350. Reservations are due by Tuesday, February 21. The reservation form can be found on our website, libertydaytonchamber.com, under "Forms & Documents".
NEWS FROM THE CHAMBER

TAX FRAUD AND IDENTITY THEFT
With tax season in full swing the Internal Revenue Service continues to increase efforts to combat identity theft and tax refund fraud through its many processing filters, which in some cases may cause delays with certain refunds in 2017. According to the IRS website "the IRS and its partners saw a marked improvement in the battle against identity theft in 2016. This is highlighted by the number of new people reporting stolen identities on federal tax returns falling by more than 50 percent, with nearly 275,000 fewer victims compared to a year ago".

An example of a new process involves tax returns that claim EITC (Earned Income Tax Credit) or ACTC (Additional Child Tax Credit). The IRS reports "beginning in 2017, a new law approved by Congress requires the IRS to hold refunds on tax returns claiming the EITC or the ACTC until mid-February. The IRS must hold the entire refund - even the portion not associated with the EITC and ACTC - until at least Feb. 15. This change helps ensure that taxpayers get the refund they are owed by giving the agency more time to help detect and prevent fraud".

Tax filers should also be aware of the various schemes perpetrated by crooks this time of year. Each season brings new methods used by the bad guys to commit tax fraud and identity theft. You can read about these scams and alerts on this section of the IRS website.

In Memoriam
Boyd Arnold

1928 - 2017

Eli Boyd Arnold, 88, of Dayton, Texas passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 21, 2017 in Houston, Texas. Services were held 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church, Dayton with interment at Magnolia Park Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home, Dayton.

Boyd was born November 16, 1928 in Springdale, Texas (just outside of Atlanta) to parents, Thomas "Todd" Hamilton Arnold and Elizabeth Skinner Arnold. He moved to Dayton in 1943 making Dayton his lifelong home. Boyd was a proud graduate of the Dayton High School class of 1946, where he was a member of the football team, class favorite and president of his senior class. In his early years Boyd worked for General Crude. In 1954 he and Turner Kirksey started a painting and drywall business, he later became part owner and partners with Joe and Bobby Harris at Pelco Construction. In 1981 Boyd and Patsie Arnold formed Arnold Construction and remained active in their business until their retirement in 2016. He and Patsie were so proud when people said "My home was Boyd Arnold built".

Boyd was very devoted to his church, the First United Methodist Church of Dayton. He served in all capacities throughout the years, chairman of the administrative board, board of trustees, chairman of the building committee, Sunday school teacher and superintendent of the youth department. He was always there when his church needed him to help in any way.

When his sons were young Boyd coached and supported them in Pee-Wee and Little League, he later became Baseball Commissioner. His love and encouragement for children was a driving force in the Dayton community as Boyd worked to make the Dayton City Park and the Parker Park a reality. He served as President on the Dayton School Board.

The Jones Library was one of Boyd's special projects. He worked tirelessly to raise funds and support this very important addition for Dayton. Boyd was extremely proud of the Dayton Community Center and the Senior Center where he served as President for several years.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #825 and a life member of the Elks Lodge.

Boyd and Gene Touchstone were the founding forces behind the formation of the Dayton Chamber of Commerce. They were just honored this past week for their dedication and hard work for the Chamber. Boyd was one of the first members and president of the Dayton Community Development Corporation. In 1989 Boyd was awarded Citizen of the Year from the Liberty-Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce.
