It's YOUR Money!

We recently discovered that the District has made an ENORMOUS underpayment to every KEA member-an underpayment worth millions of dollars. Since 2013/14, NO KEA member has been paid for the three pre-service days worked in August. In November, we brought this underpayment to the attention of the District. The District responded by saying:  "It is important to note that the number of TRI days increased significantly from the final year of the 11-13 contract to the first year of the 13-16 contract, specifically Deemed Done days (the days for which the District maintains pre-service days are included)..." In other words, the District is arguing that the three August days, where you set up your classrooms, attend Districtwide "pep rallies," and sit through two full days of principal/ district directed time, are included in your teacher-directed deemed done time! Obviously, KEA disagrees, and has filed a grievance to recover your money.
Here's how the numbers break down:
- 3 pre-service days that haven't been paid over 4 years = 12 days of lost pay per member
-  2 days of principal/District- directed time over 4 years = 60 unpaid hours of meetings and PD per member
-  1 day of classroom set-up over 4 years = 30 unpaid hours
-   Suppose your daily per diem rate is $250. Since 2013/14, you have not been paid for $3000 worth of work. Remember this number varies based on your daily per diem rate-it could be less or it could be more.
-  The cost of paying all 1850 KEA certified members $3000 for these days = $5,550,000

On Monday, the District failed to make a timely notification to students and staff regarding a shortened schedule due to inclement weather. Notification was made via email at 6:58 am, after high school staff were in route to work or at work. Staff teaching zero hour classes had been supervising students for nearly half an hour prior to being notified that school was delayed two hours! A District wide phone notification was made at 7:23, after the teacher workday at high school began. Many students were already at school when the notification was made, and teachers supervised the students, even though school was not in session.
The District does not believe they are obligated to follow the Collective Bargaining Agreement, which reads "work planned for late arrival time will be canceled and, employees will report to work one half hour before the start of the adjusted student day, " and that ""staff will not be required to supervise students during the late-arrival time."
After multiple attempts to problem-solve, the District has refused to work with the Association. KEA has filed a grievance.
