Pickering's vision for recreation and parks

The City is working on a Recreation and Parks Master Plan that will guide our decisions on Pickering's recreational facilities, parks, programs and service delivery over the next 10 years.

The plan will be a Council-approved document that will provide the framework for managing parks and recreation programs, infrastructure, and investment within our community in a fiscally responsible manner. It will address what types of recreation programs, services, facilities and parks should be provided, where they should be located or offered, when they will be needed, and how they will be implemented or funded.

Visit pickering.ca/recreationandparks to find out how you can get involved in the process.

Skateboard Park Strategy

Staff recognize the need for more skateboard facilities in Pickering. As an extension of the Recreation and Parks Master Plan, we will be developing a City-wide Skateboard Park Strategy to determine the overall need, and most appropriate locations, for future skateboard facilities.

Currently, Pickering has one skateboard facility, located in Diana, Princess of Wales Park. Concept plans will be prepared and presented to the public and stakeholders for review and approval at a future public engagement meeting. Stay tuned at pickering.ca for details.

Be prepared - subscribe to power outage alerts

Veridian customers have the ability to receive a notification when there is a power outage affecting two or more addresses, when the estimated time of restoration has been updated, and when the power has been restored.

Customers can register for my.alerts through Veridian's customer portal, and choose what notification method they would like to receive - SMS/text, email and/or phone call.

The new service is in addition to Veridian's other outage communication tools, including an interactive map, Twitter feed, and 24-hour hotline.

Veridian is the electricity distributor for Pickering. Visit veridian.on.ca for more information.

Improve energy efficiency in your home

A more energy-efficient home can save you money on utility bills while helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The checklist was created with help from our local utilities. Visit veridian.on.ca and enbridgegas.com/rebates to learn about available incentives, coupons, programs, and other resources to help you better understand your energy use.

Good Neighbour program

The Good Neighbour program is an open call for citizens to nominate a good neighbour whose actions create a vibrant and connected neighbourhood. It is important to recognize the simple acts of human kindness that occur between neighbours, making Pickering a place we are proud to call home.

Visit pickering.ca to nominate someone you know!

Winter Wise

Here are some friendly points to keep in mind this winter:

On-Street Parking

Parking is prohibited from December 1st to March 31st between 2 am and 5 am, and during any winter control operations (in accordance with Traffic & Parking By-law). If vehicles are hindering the snow clearing operations, they will be ticketed ($25.00 fine) and/or towed (at the owner's expense).
Parked cars not only slow operations, but create a hazard for snow clearing staff, and cause large amounts of snow to be left on the road after the car is dug out.

Sidewalks

Residents are responsible for removing ice and snow from sidewalks in front of, or beside, their property within 24 hours after a snowfall. This helps ensure that everyone has a safe passage along our sidewalks.

Windrow

A windrow is the pile of snow that is left at the bottom of a driveway after the snow plow has cleared the road.

Operators do their best to minimize windrows and we understand how frustrating this can be for our residents who have just cleared their driveway, but unfortunately it is unavoidable and we appreciate your understanding.

It is the resident's responsibility to clear the windrows, and as a safety measure, we ask that you shovel the excess snow on to the boulevard and not back on to the road.

Bus Shelters and Super Mailboxes

Bus shelters are cleared by a contractor through Durham Region Transit.

Snow removal around super mailboxes is completed by Canada Post.
