Have You Thanked a School Counselor?
This week is National School Counseling Week -- and there has never been a better time to celebrate and recognize the impact school counselors have on students' success and career planning. Be sure to thank your school counselor for the work they do in helping our kids reach their potential. Counselors are one of the ways we are supporting the Whole Child to reach our Denver Plan 2020 goals.
Need some ideas to help say "thank you"? Consider nominating your school counselor for the Leadership Lamp Award for the chance to be recognized during the Night of Honor this spring. Updated Immigration Rights FAQs for Families; More to Come
We have heard from a number of educators concerned about the impact of the recent travel ban on our students, families and communities. To assist with questions you may be receiving, we have updated our Immigration Rights FAQ in

.This includes answers to questions such as:
Q: What should DPS employees do if they get a request for information about a student from a federal immigration official?
A: The DPS employee should not provide any information and should immediately refer the individual to the DPS Office of General Counsel, 720-423-3309.
Q: What should a DPS employee do if an immigration official tries to come on to school grounds or asks to interview a student?
A: Immediately contact DPS Safety, 720-423-3911, and the DPS Office of General Counsel, 720-423-3309.

Donate Socks for DPS Students
Support our DPS students in need by donating a package of new, youth-sized socks during Transportation Services Sock-It-To-Me sock drive. Simply drop off the socks in bins located at the following locations: Food Services building, Emily Griffith Campus (in the lobby), Facilities building or either of the Transportation terminals. Deadline to donate is Feb. 21. The socks will then be transported to one of our DPS schools and passed out to students who need them. For more information, contact

"Joshua Duran knows the Skinner Middle School community inside and out. He always puts Equity first and will do whatever it takes to support our students in their journey to emotional, academic and societal success. Joshua holds students accountable for their behavior in a manner that teaches them pro-social skills, while maintaining their dignity. When he isn't in his office working on an issue with someone, he is sitting in the classroom supporting behaviorally struggling students so that they don't miss out on important instructional time. Students can count on him 'not to play' when it comes to the serious stuff but to 'be playful' in building and maintaining strong relationships with them.
"Joshua helped start the Latin Student Alliance at Skinner Middle School and, through this student group, he has lived all of the DPS Shared Core Values. He helped put on Denver's second annual Segundo de febrero, which is an event that teaches the history of the Mexican, Mexican-American and Indigenous communities of the United States and how their history impacts those groups today. In this event, he guided students on art projects that explored who they are and helped them learn more about their history and identity. He is a true asset to Denver Public Schools."
