Rule of Three
|
At this time of the year many people are busy setting up resolutions to help improve their lives in the coming year. You have probably heard the Nugget Alaskan Outfitter commercials saying that we are the first step to adventure. The Nugget is also a first step towards what many people including myself, would list for New Year's resolutions (getting in shape, losing weight and staying happy). We can get you up and moving with the most comfortable shoes, packs, clothing and gear to keep you active, comfortable and happy. Have you heard of the rule of threes? A person can live: 3 minutes without air 3 days without water 3 weeks without food The rule of three is also a writing principle that suggests that things that come in threes are inherently funnier, more satisfying, or more effective than other numbers of things. The Latin phrase, "omne trium perfectum" (everything that comes in threes is perfect, or, every set of three is complete) conveys the same idea as the rule of three. So here's to the New Year - in Threes.

3 New Year Resolutions
|
1. Get in shape
Three tips for getting into shape

Set Realistic Goals
Be consistent That means that every day must include a 20 minute period of exercise. A short walk, hike, swim, ski, paddle, bike ride, etc. Find things that you really enjoy doing so you want to keep doing them.
Follow an Effective Exercise Routine
The American Council on Exercise (ACE) recently surveyed 1,000 ACE-certified personal trainers about the best techniques to get fit. Their top three suggestions:
- Strength training. Even 20 minutes a day twice a week will help tone the entire body.
- Interval training. "In its most basic form, interval training might involve walking for two minutes, running for two, and alternating this pattern throughout the duration of a workout," says Cedric Bryant, PhD, FACSM, chief science officer for ACE. "It is an extremely time-efficient and productive way to exercise."
- Increased cardio/aerobic exercise. Bryant suggests accumulating 60 minutes or more a day of low- to moderate-intensity physical activity, such as walking, running, or dancing.
Activities outside of the gym
Break Out the Shovel
"Why pay someone to clear snow from your driveway? Besides burning nearly 400 calories per hour, shoveling snow develops muscular endurance and power. But be safe: Minimize the amount of snow on each shovelful, and bend from your knees and hips, not your back." -Tom Seabourne, Ph.D., exercise physiologist and sports psychologist at Northeast Texas Community College in Mount Pleasant, Texas
Work Out During Your Workday
"Sit on a stability ball
to strengthen your core, and keep dumbbells or exercise tubing at your desk. Squeeze in 12 to 15 reps of exercises like dumbbell curls, overhead presses and ab crunches; aim for two or three sets of each. This gives you more free time to fit in fun workouts like biking or tennis."
WALK -enjoy the outdoors and the many trails around Juneau
A new study finds that even gentle lunchtime strolls can perceptibly - and immediately - buoy people's moods and ability to handle stress at work. It is not news, of course, that walking is healthy and that people who walk or otherwise exercise regularly tend to be more calm, alert and happy than people who are inactive.
- Just 15 minutes of walking after eating improves blood glucose control.
- A 30 minute brisk walk lowers blood pressure and triglyceride levels.
- A 30 minute walk increases killer T-cells and other markers of immune function, in other words it can boost your immune system.
There are so many suggestions about how to lose weight, diet - don't diet, carbs vs protein, good foods vs bad foods. Really it all condenses down to:
Exercise
Eat whole foods in sm
aller portions more often throughout the day
Drink plenty of water

- Water helps your body function properly. It flushes out impurities, helps with digestion, transports nutrients to your cells, improves circulation, decreases the chance of kidney stones and helps manage stress.
- Water also helps boost your metabolism and simultaneously makes you feel fuller so you will eat less.
- Water is nature's own beauty cream. Fine lines and wrinkles are deeper when you are dehydrated. Drinking water hydrates skin cells and plumps them up, making your face look younger.
3. Enjoy life to the Fullest
Juneau has everything I need to complete these resolutions: Great water for drinking and playing in and on, wilderness with lots of trails to get out and walk on, sources of natural whole foods such as berries and salmon, and stunning vistas in every direction full of adventure, peace and beauty to nurture the soul. The staff at NAO hope you have a happy and prosperous 2016.
