A Message from the herbalist:
Identifying Usnea

This is the perfect time of year to harvest usnea, which I am holding in the photo above. Usnea is gray-green lichen ("like-en") that grows like hair, or tassels, on the bark or twigs of mostly dying or dead trees.

Usnea is a special herb. It is an "herbal antibiotic" that is soothing to the mucus membranes and is immuno- stimulating. It is a great choice for sinus and respiratory infections with fever. It is very effective against gram positive bacteria, including tuberculosis, staph, strep, and pneumonia bacterias. Usnea is particularly useful for hot conditions of the skin and mucus membranes. This makes it a perfect choice for bladder and gut infections.

It should be taken as a tincture (it is not very water-soluable), at a dose of 2 droppers, 2-3 x a day. It is also indicated for staph or infected skin or wounds applied as a diluted tincture as a wash or spray. To make the tincture at home, simply cut up the usnea into small pieces with sissors, and place the usnea in a small jar, packing it down. Then, cover the usnea up with everclear and close the lid. Shake a few times a week and it will be ready to use in 4-6 weeks.

Also called Old Man's Beard, Usnea
grows all over the world, including the forests and forest edges of Colorado. It is easy to harvest. Just pluck the lichen from the branches of trees in clean areas, and place directly into a paper bag. This will avoid losing the usnic acid which appears as a yellow powder, and is the antibiotic constituent of Usnea's valuable medicine. Happy harvesting!

LINCOLN CENTER is an exciting new urban renewal project just across from Sage Consulting's new building!
It houses several eateries, workout studios, a cool barbershop, massage therapist, chiropractor, a coffee shop, brewery, restaurant and a traditional bakery!

Check out ReVibe, Valerie's favorite pilates studio here!

One of the best ways to prepare for seasonal allergies is to begin taking Allergy Aid tincture, 2 droppers, 2 x per day, a few months before the season begins.
I 'M ELECAMPAGNE

DO YOU KNOW ME?
Elecampagne ro ot is the herbalist's choice for healing long-term lung complaints. It is especially useful where there is lung damage, or scarring of the lungs.

Valerie uses it for her clients with chronic lung infections and Cystic Fibrosis, to repair and support their fragile lungs.

At Sage Consulting
,
we prepare the tincture from beautiful, fresh roots.

The roots go deep in the earth and attach themselves to many tiny rocks. They take forever to clean! But their magical medicine is worth it.
