Scientists Reveal How the Brain Maintains Useful Memories
[Source:  Medical X-Press]

Researchers from the University of Toronto, Canada, have discovered a reason why we often struggle to remember the smaller details of past experiences.

Writing in the journal eLife, the team found that there are specific groups of neurons in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) of a rat's brain - the region most associated with long-term memory. These neurons develop codes to help store relevant, general information from multiple experiences while, over time, losing the more irrelevant, minor details unique to each experience.

In Breakthrough, Researchers Detect Autism Signs In Infants
[Source: Disability Scoop]

For the first time, a new study suggests it's possible to predict within the first year of life if a child will develop autism.

Researchers say they were able to identify with more than 90 percent accuracy which babies would go on to be diagnosed with the developmental disorder by age 2.

The  findings published Wednesday could be a game changer, pointing to the possibility of identifying children on the spectrum at far younger ages and before behavioral symptoms become apparent, researchers said.

IDEA Website Back Online Following Outage
Editor's Note:  Earlier this week we shared two posts about this issue.  The first article from Disability Scoop, talked about  the IDEA website outage and that Senators Murray and Cantwell were demanding answers.     Our second post, suggested an advocacy action in the form of a letter/postcard campaign.   We called Senator Murray's office and let her people know that the SPED community was prepared to back them up.    Today, the IDEA website is back up.

One book that's been on our shelves for years is  Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. This was one of our oldest daughter's favorite books! Perhaps your family has read the book over and over again (believe me, I understand that!) or maybe even watched the go-along movie.

OT Corner:: How Do You Talk to Parents About Sensory Sensitivities?
[Source: Your Therapy Source]

After reading a thought provoking blog post from Christopher Alterio,OTR, on  Deconstructing the myth of clothing sensitivity as a 'sensory processing disorder', it really made me think about how we talk to parents as pediatric therapists.  Not just about clothing sensitivity or other sensory sensitivities but about any concern that a parent comes to discuss with a pediatric occupational

Usi ng Improv To Help Kids w/Autism Show & Read Emotion
[Source:  NPR.org]

It can be difficult to socialize and make friends for many children with autism. Often that's because reading body language and others' emotions doesn't always come easily.

Many of us seem to learn these social skills naturally, but maybe there's also a way to teach them.

[Source:  SpeechBlog UK]

Negatives are a really important thing to understand and always a high priority for me to target if a child is struggling with them.  If you don't know that there's a difference between "push" and "don't push" you can immediately see that it can lead to all sorts of problems!

The first thing to do if you think your child is struggling with negatives is to pick apart exactly what is causing the problem.  It may be that they don't understand the words no or not.  However, it might also be that the sentence is just too long and they are only
