Get a grip this winter

Winter is fast approaching and with it comes, freezing rain, black ice and snow. Protect yourself from falls by adding a traction device to your shoes or boots. We sell several types that will fit on any type of shoe or boot. Below is a brief discription of the basic styles of traction devices and a table which compares the styles that we currently carry at NAO.

Coiled Devices

The most basic and inexpensive form of traction is a coiled device such as the Yaktrax Pro, which can be attached to just about any kind of shoe or boot. These devices are ideal for simple outdoor work or walks that may lead you over flat surfaces where packed snow or slick ice may have accumulated, such as driveways, sidewalks, and similar terrain. The device is fixed to the shoe with stretchy rubber cables that are wrapped in wires that effectively dig into snow and ice.

Spiked Devices

When you picture traction devices, a spiked device most likely comes to mind. This form of traction device, made especially prominent by the brand Kahtoola Microspikes, is typically a little more expensive than coiled devices, but you certainly get more from your dollar. These devices are more durable than coils, and can claw into ice and snow much more effectively. Featuring several small metal spikes or cleats, the device attaches to your shoe or boot using a stretchy rubber harness. Ideal for those who walk, run or work outdoors and require more stability and increased traction for snow or ice.

Crampons

Crampons are the preferred traction device for more arduous, slicker, and steeper trails, and are reserved for serious winter activities. We carry the Kahtoola K10 Crampons that are great for hiking on our slippery trails and boardwalks especially during the winter. They have inch spikes, so they can really dig in deep. You definitely don't want to forget to take them off before going indoors!

Ice Bugs
Ice worms are ok, but we prefer Icebugs.

In 2001, Icebug began creating traction footwear with the goal of allowing us to stay active all year - without the fear of slipping. Their great line of boots have a unique rubber compound (BUGrip) that provides outstanding traction and smart studs, which adapt to the surface. BUGrip is the name of Icebug's grip technology for the most slippery conditions.

The BUGrip sole is made of a special rubber compound with 15-19 integrated steel studs. The design of the studs, together with the properties of the rubber compound, give these studs a dynamic function. The studs work independently from each other and are not completely fixed. When weight is applied the studs push in toward the surface of the sole. How far they are pushed in depends on the pressure exerted by the user and the resistance from the ground. This dynamic function makes the studs adapt to the surface and provide the best possible traction on anything from dry asphalt to pure ice.

We have several styles to choose from with zippers or velcro for getting on or off easily, and they are insulated to keep you warm.
