EDNA GOES TO WASHINGTON!

Terry, Cindy, Chris, and Edna Woods

As most of you know, the New England Parkinson's Ride was started by the Woods Family when Chris Woods was diagnosed with Young Onset PD at the age of 41. Although the entire family participates at various levels, Chris's mom, Edna, was and still is the driving force behind the Ride. At 82 years old, her determination to find a cure for her son, and everyone else affected by PD, knows no bounds.

And so, at the invitation of The Michael J Fox Foundation,
Edna, along with Chris's wife Terry, will represent the
New England Parkinson's Ride and the Parkinson's Community at
The 2017 Parkinson's Policy Forum in Washington, DC
from February 26-28th!

Edna and Terry will not only have an opportunity to learn more about the public policy and advocacy work of The Michael J Fox Foundation but will attend a full day of meetings on Capitol Hill where they will build relationships with members of Congress and educate them on Parkinson's disease. Who better than Edna and Terry to help these lawmakers understand the perspectives of patients, families and loved ones who live with the disease every day. If anyone can convince them of how critical the need for a cure is, we all know Edna can! Just don't be surprised if you see a whole contingent of Senators and Congressmen on their bikes this September!

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Take 5 minutes to send a letter to Washington asking for support from those representing your state. It's simple, just use the link provided by MJFF and add your personal story.

YOU SPOKE AND WE LISTENED!

Thank You to the hundreds of cyclists and volunteers who took the time to answer our Survey Questions and provide the feedback we needed to continue to improve our Ride! As a result, we are working with Team Fox on an enhanced Registration Process and a new "Fundraising HQ"
(formally your Participant Center) that will give you more tools to help you in your fundraising efforts! There may be slight disruptions to our website over the next two weeks as we complete this process.

Watch for a newsletter announcing the opening of
the registration site later this month!

In addition we are addressing the following:

  • Chip technology to alleviate the need to remove bib numbers at the end of the ride and possibly allow us to track riders along the routes.
  • A slight re-route in the Kennebunkport area, necessary for two reasons. 1) Poorly behaved cyclists riding 3 & 4 abreast have compromised our town permit, requiring changes to the route. Thankfully we do not expect this to significantly impact our ocean views.   2) Feedback from many of you that Route 9 should be eliminated where possible. Updated MapMyRide and directions will be available as soon as the new route has been approved.
  • Additional Police presence at difficult intersections.
  • Additional Marshals to make sure ALL CYCLISTS abide by the Rules of the Road.
  • More clearly defined Entrance and Exit signs at The Ballpark.
  • The slight possibility of adding a Metric Century (62.5 miles).
  • Shorter beer lines!
  • And more advertising, more splash, and more fun for our 10th Anniversary Ride!
Of course these things cost money and in order to continue to donate 100% of the funds raised by our cyclists and volunteers to The Michael J Fox Foundation, we will need to increase registration fees to cover them. We will not however be increasing the minimum fundraising or VIP Jersey requirements. Watch for more information coming soon!
