Red Bluff AHA held their first winter horse show. RBAHA used the ODS system. Many thanks to those who supported the show.  A  40% increase in entries was encouraging.  Providing a show in January seemed to be of interest to trainers and exhibitors.  This year the show was open to Arabians, Half-Arabian AND all other breeds. This inclusion of other breeds was an excellent way for  people who had  other breeds to see the Arabian in all their versatility. Cow classes were part of the schedule as were Halter, Hunter. English, Native Costume, Western. ATR and Youth classes were part of the schedule. The weather was typical winter, rainy and sunny.  With covered arenas, the show was kept on schedule.  Again many thanks to all who supported the show, worked the show and made it successful. Looking forward to 2018 and another January Show.

Wine Country Arabian Horse Association will have a booth and our youth members will be doing a Native Costume Demonstration at the Hoofbeats in the Vineyard Event being held April 29th. Region 5
AHA Region 5 Northwest EquestFest a Home Run!
Region 5 hosted their second Northwest EquestFest, an event that is a part of their mini convention series that the region has been hosting for the past 10 years. This year the event moved to the Tacoma Convention Center, allowing to bring 12 lecturers on various equine topics to the community for free. Speakers included a leadership coach, three veterinarians that discussed nutrition, emergency care and lameness, local trainers/judges discussing equitation, equine insurance, equine law, desensitizing your horse, rider fitness, braiding, ranch pleasure, and much more!

Multiple sponsors made this year's event a huge success, including a goody bag and vendor row by Reber Ranch and lecture room sponsor Evergreen Equine and Maria Danieli Real Estate. Lunch brought a fashion show sponsored by Dave Smith Motors, featuring attire from many of our vendors including fun ideas of what to wear to the barn for practice along with trends in all the Arabian classes. This event drew not just Arabian Horse Region 5 members, but also 4-H members, Pony Club, other breed competitors, and people just starting out in the horse world. Region 5 provided an Arabian Horse Association booth displaying pictures of our versatile horses competing in a multitude of disciplines. Tables of donated silent auction items from local and national businesses ran down the length of the hall, garnering attention from many attendees. This year the event was also opened up to 30 vendors, allowing attendees to shop for anything horse related from show gear to jewelry and information on breed associations and both local and national magazines.

The evening came to a close with our Region 5 Arabian Horse Awards Banquet. Awards were given out to the winners of the Arabian Horse Region 5 High Point Program. Each Champion received a perpetual trophy, bridle bag and Champion ribbon, Reserve Champion received a tote bag and ribbon, and ribbons were given through tenth place. The winners of the Region 5 Arabian Horse Open Show High Point Program also received their awards that night. This program recognizes people that show their Arabians and Half Arabians in open shows, promoting our versatile breed throughout the greater equine community. Special awards were also presented: A Youth and Adult Volunteer of the Year as well as a Sportsmanship award. Recipients were Bonny Braden, Julie Karnath, Rihanna Anderson and Presley Cole and Sportsmanship awards recipients were Rihanna Anderson and Alicia Garret.

The highlight of the night might have been Ron Copple Jr and Michael Wheilhan speaking on their involvement with the Arabian Horsemen's Distress Fund. This introduced the organization to everyone in attendance, and gave them the chance to raise money for a wonderful cause. Our AHDF Cake Auction raised $3,247.70. Additionally our silent auction items raised $845 for the Region 5 Youth and $1,984 that will be split between the AHDF, Region 5 Youth, and Little Bit, a local therapeutic riding center.

A huge thanks to all those who attended, sponsored, and presented. Not to be forgotten - a special thank you to our amazing master of ceremonies Ian Sage!

This event would not have been possible without the wonderful committee of: Michelle Pease Paulsen, Carrie Olson, Shannon Bedell, Joyce Thomas, and Pat Hough.

We also want to thank Coral Link Photography for taking wonderful photos throughout the day and the evening ceremony.

Winner of the 2016 PRAHA Scholarship

PRAHA Youth Scholarship Program Application

My name is Morgan Danika Overstreet and I have been riding horses since I was 6 years old. As I am currently 15, that means I have spent more than half my life dedicating myself to my involvement as an equestrian and their industry. I have spent most of my equine career involved with Arabian horses. Through AHA I found that not only was this breed graceful and versatile, but so were their owners. I learned how I can help to empower others through horses and improved upon my ability to lead people through something I am passionate about.

As for my involvement with AHA this year I am the current Region 5 Youth Co-Director. I put a lot of time into this position both before and during my term. Alongside with being a Director I was a member of the Region 5 National Judging Team where I competed at nationals and received 6th in the performance section.

I am an involved member with PRAHA and have helped out at several shows, a task I greatly enjoy. When it comes to local clubs I am very involved with my High School's Key Club, a club structured around community service and bettering the lives of others. Through Key Club I have greatly grown as a leader and public speaker. I have served on the officer board this past year as the clubs Bulletin Editor. I also am a Microsoft Student Ambassador in which I help to empower the youth in my community through technology.

As an ambassador I have been participating in many activities such as an elementary outreach program in which we teach coding to elementary students. I am also a member of my school's Girls Honor Club.

Through these clubs I have had the ability to participate in many different community service events. Such events include working with NW Harvest, an organization that packages food and sends it to different Food Banks around Kent. I was also an active volunteer at Aegis, an assisted living home for those who have Dementia. I have done several other forms of community service throughout my High School years, especially in the horse world.

Last year I attended most every Region 5 show and volunteered my time to help make things run as smoothly as I could for those who were running it. I also recently attended the Scottsdale Arabian Horseshow and volunteered at the AHYA Booth for 8 hours. I have a great passion for volunteering and I hope in the future to be able to help others globally.

A personal story of mine that I cherish greatly is what led me to starting up horseback riding lessons when I was little. My parents decided to write on 3 empty Gatorade bottles one of the following activities, "swimming, horseback riding, dance." They then covered up these labels with tape so I couldn't tell which bottle was labeled with what activity. After each time I completed a chore I got to put 1 M&M in the bottle of my choosing, at the end of the month we would see which bottle had the most M&M's and the activity the bottle was labeled with was the activity I was to take up. I, being a rebellious little child snuck into the kitchen one night and checked to see which bottle was labeled"horseback riding." I then made sure this was the bottle with the most M&M's, and so my career as an equestrian begins!

My GPA my 9th grade year was a 4.0 and as of this past semester my GPA is a 3.944. As of right now my primary interests are in International Business Management, Equine Business Management or Equine Science. I also find great interest in Marine Biology and things related to animals. I do not have a specific school as of right now to be attended, but it has been a goal of mine for a while now to attend Stanford. If I win this scholarship I will apply it to furthering my education in both the equine and outside industries.
Thank you for considering me for this scholarship,
Morgan Danika Overstreet.

Region 8
The "Thunder for Humanity" project has made good progress in a very short time. Sharon Magness Blake announced the project to the public in a recent news release. She has chosen an artist and the sculpture will be shipped to him directly. Our main goal is to generate interest in this project and the upcoming auction for the soon to be announced charity. The Region 8 "Thunder for Humanity" committee is working closely with AHA, Sharon and Ann Judge. All is going well and we look forward to the unveiling in the not too distant future.

Applications for the Burr Betts Scholarship are due April 1, 2017.  The application is on the Region 8 website or please contact Rusty Cook at [email protected].
