WELCOME ABOARD TOWN OF NORTH BEACH!

Solar panels at North Beach Public Works facility

The Town of North Beach recently became the second of the only two incorporated municipalities in Calvert County (along with their neighbor Chesapeake Beach, which was SM-certified in 2015) to join the Sustainable Maryland program.

North Beach has had an Environmental Committee for many years, which has solid mix of volunteers with varied backgrounds, including a registered nurse, USDA environmental scientist, retired Coast Guard engineer, retired builder, and a local health food store owner.

The town has demonstrated a strong commitment to lowering its carbon footprint. Their new Town Hall is a very green building, with energy efficient lighting, bamboo flooring, low-flow toilets and faucets, an electric vehicle charging station, and a green roof, one of the very few on a town hall building in Maryland . The town's Public Works building also features a solar panel array.

North Beach has also focused on protecting its abundant natural resources, including the completion of a living shoreline project at the Walton Beach Nature Reserve, and its House and Garden Club has extensively promoted UMD's Bay-Wise yard certification program to their residents.

We look forward to working with the Town of North Beach!

Sustainable Maryland is an initiative of the Environmental Finance Center at the University of Maryland. It is a free and voluntary program designed to help Maryland communities choose a direction for their sustainability efforts, improve access to resources needed to implement action, and recognize their accomplishments. Our sponsors include the Town Creek Foundation, US Environmental Protection Agency, and the Maryland Municipal League.
