It was great to see so many community members at the RYSE Youth Center's fundraising event last month.
RYSE youth there have now produced a second multimedia show that will debut at the El Cerrito Performing Arts Theater this month.
In this production, titled "Fairytale," playwright Gemikia Henderson hopes to shed light on the tragedy of sexual violence and domestic violence, which disproportionately impact women of color.
WHAT: "Fairytale," a production of the RYSE Youth Center
WHERE: El Cerrito High School Performing Arts Theater at 540 Ashbury Ave.
WHEN: May 14, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and May 15, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
RYSE describes the show's themes as an exploration of "...
the fantasies around love and relationships we project onto each other and how they come crumbling down when faced with the realities of gender stereotypes, teen dating violence and rape culture."
The production integrates film with live performance and promises to engage the audience through a spectrum of creative mediums in order to spark critical dialogue.
"Fairytale" is intended for mature audiences aged 13 and over.
Tickets start at $15 for adults (ages 22 and over) and $10 for youth.
Group rates for groups of 10 or more are available.
