Take the First Step Toward Making a Difference!hotline

We are recruiting Crisis Prevention and Intervention volunteers to serve as emotional support/crisis intervention specialists for a 24/7 confidential hotline, as well as text and online chat services. The next training course begins April 1.

All kinds of people can be trained as successful hotline specialists: retirees, stay at home parents, young professionals, empty-nesters, college students, or anyone with a desire to make a positive impact on the well-being of our community.

Develop your supportive listening skills, build your resume, or help improve or even save someone's life. Training and volunteering as a Crisis Prevention and Intervention specialist will help you achieve all of those goals. If you're an undergraduate or graduate student, you may register as an intern and possibly receive school credit.

Here's what some of our Crisis Prevention and Intervention volunteers
have to say about their experience:

  • "Helping people who are in desperate need has been one of the most meaningful and fulfilling experiences of my life."
  • "The constant training in being able to listen and connect with others experiencing crisis was rewarding.  Knowing that I was able to help someone get through their day genuinely influenced me in a positive way."
  • "I love the people.  Everyone I came across, including the trainees, were very warm and welcoming.  The atmosphere that was created among everyone really contributed to my ability to do well as a hotline specialist."

To start making a difference, please visit  EveryMind's Volunteer page for more information and a Crisis Prevention and Intervention volunteer  application or contact Pamela Lee, EveryMind Volunteer Coordinator at [email protected].

EveryMind Supports Inside (not Outside) Initiative to End Chronic Homelessness in Montgomery Countyhomeless

Among all of the issues affecting our modern society, chronic homelessness is often seen as one of the most challenging. EveryMind is proud to stand with community and government partners across Montgomery County to confront this challenge. A newly formed initiative, Inside (not Outside), is working to raise awareness and attract support for the shared goal of the Montgomery County Interagency Commission on Homelessness (ICH) to end chronic homelessness by the end of 2017.

EveryMind is uniquely positioned to add impact to this initiative. Recently, we expanded our Adult and Community Services staff to include three street outreach case managers (two of whom are bilingual) to provide direct services to individuals experiencing homelessness.

Inside (not Outside) is one part of the ICH member organizations' range of efforts, which include the recent successful drive to end Veterans homelessness in the County, the many successes in the 100,000 Homes campaign, and the ongoing work to assist families, children, and youth who are going through the trauma of being without a safe and stable home.

Ending chronic homelessness is a huge goal. Only a handful of communities in the U.S. have successfully taken on the challenge and proven that they could move their most vulnerable residents into a permanent home and start a new chapter in their lives.

With an appropriate sense of urgency and with partners including EveryMind, Montgomery County intends to join the roster. EveryMind is excited to participate in this community strengthening initiative.

EveryMind is a member of the Maryland Behavioral Health Coalition which advocates for access to high quality mental health services and adequate funding for our behavioral health system. As the Maryland legislative session moves forward in Annapolis, the Coalition is weighing in on legislative priorities and budget proposals for the upcoming fiscal year.

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan's proposed fiscal year 2018 budget includes a needed 2 percent rate increase f or both Medicaid and uninsured services. However, with rising demand for mental health and substance use disorder treatment and increasing medical costs, the Coalition maintains that behavioral health providers are still losing ground. The goal with this year's budget must be to secure more stable, long-term funding to support community providers.

T he Keep the Door Open Act is the top priority in the Coalition's 2017  legislative platform . The legislation indexes the behavioral health provider rates, which have only had seven modest increases in more than 20 years, to the cost of medical inflation. Advocates believe the Keep the Door Open Act will help community health clinics and other behavioral health providers treat patients before more costly hospital or emergency care is needed.

The Coalition has planned a "Keep the Door Open"  rally for February 23 at Lawyers Mall in Annapolis.
