Weekly news from the Church of St. Martin-in-the-Fields
Rector's Note:
Eric Liddell Day

In my household the movie Chariots of Fire is mandatory viewing. The movie tells the interwoven stories of two English Olympians Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams who competed in the 1925 Olympics. Liddell died during his tenure as a missionary in China on February 21, 1945.

His feast day, February 21, is coming up, and I want to encourage you to observe it by watching the film with your family on the weekend before or after that date (it is PG-13 so very family friendly.) -I have at least four reasons to urge this attention to Eric Liddell:

The Laramie Project

A Staged Reading
Sunday, Feb. 19th at 2 p.m. in the Parish Hall
In October 1998 in the middle of the prairie outside Laramie, Wyoming, Matthew Shepard, a 21-year-old student at the University of Wyoming, was tied to a fence post, severely beaten, robbed, tortured and left alone to die. His body - battered, bloody, barely clinging to life - was discovered eighteen hours later. He was rushed to the hospital and put on life support. He died five days later. The reason for this brutal crime? Matthew Shepard was gay.

Power Analysis: Unpacking Harrisburg for Statewide Work Training
In the wake of the 2016 election results, the political landscape in Harrisburg - and at all levels of government - has changed. In order to resist faithfully, we must understand how power operates. Join us on Tuesday, February 28th from 6:00 PM - 8:30 PM at Second Baptist Church of Germantown (6459 Germantown Avenue, Philadelphia PA 19119) as we work to gain a better understanding of the leadership at the state level and how it affects our issues, particularly education. For more information please contact POWER Metro Community Organizer, Will Fuller ([email protected]).

We will prepare for the April 22 training: Building Power at the Intersection of Race, Economics, Climate: how the climate crisis hurts the most vulnerable and the potential economic opportunity of shifting to renewable energy.
Help us meet our participation goal and make your 2017 pledge!
We consider our
participation goal  as equal in importance to our  financial goal .  We clearly asked every person who considers St. Martin's to be their church to make a pledge as an expectation of membership. 280 member households  responded affirmatively.  We need 20 more households to meet our participation goal of 300 pledging units.
